Israeli born, French-based pianist Yaron Herman enters the daunting, yet ultimately rewarding space of ‘solo improvised piano’ for this, his latest release. After ten albums, one might imagine the pianist dipping his toes gently into the calm waters of a quiet reflective pond, but it’s clearly apparent that Herman isn’t afraid to dive into the stormy waters of the sea, taking on the fierce waves just as confidently as the gentle, reflective ripples on a lake that can be satisfyingly bathed in.
From the age of sixteen, Herman has devoted himself to music. Under the guidance of Opher Brayer, his training encouraged him to adopt a holistic vision in which the study of music is part of a whole that includes philosophy, psychology, and mathematics. For him, the piano is thus at the centre of a more global reflection; it’s a travel companion to help decipher the mysteries of the world.
“With this album, I wanted to go straight to the point.” says the pianist. “To what I consider as essential. Without any pre-determined concept, plan or specific theme. Just sitting at the piano, closing my eyes and letting the music guide me. Into an inner journey. For the first time, I entered the studio with empty hands and minimal preparation. It resulted in a mix of free improvisations, spontaneously arranged classical themes, a deconstructed standard, and traditional pieces that emerged in an obvious manner… as if a story was unfolding before my eyes, following an invisible and intuitive narrative.”
This path has of course been taken, in a similar fashion, by various pianists over the years, most famously the masters of their art, Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. And last year, in addition to the Jarrett albums on the ECM label, there were a couple of further significant releases; the posthumous release of the only known solo recording by Esbjorn Svensson, and “The Trondheim Concert” by Espen Berg. The one defining element that carries through all of these recordings is the pianist’s individual character. And on “Alma”, Yaron Herman succeeds in bringing to the listener’s ears his own personal style and individuality. And with the skilfully, intelligently worked tunes presented here, he lets his music do the talking… exactly as it should do.
There’s a vibrant flow to the pieces on “Alma” that is particularly compelling. The music unfolds naturally, with some of the tunes being deceptively simple on the surface, and others more immediately challenging from the outset. It’s a welcome mix. Whatever the nature of the tunes themselves, there’s a clearly defined personality to the pieces that runs through the whole album, with its full range of musical motifs, beguiling melodies, and beautiful lyricism welcoming the listener into the heart of the music and its performer.
