Lyrically beautiful, unabashedly expressive and adventurous, this is some of Zorn’s finest recent writing. The description hints at a historical perspective and that’s definitely there, but the melodic inventions and harmonic complexities are pure Zorn. Though there’s plenty of experimentation and non-traditional playing, it’s never tiresome and is always in service of the music. The tracks have a natural flow and the entire disc is engaging.
Masterfully played by a trio of amazing musicians whose telepathic empathy seems boundless and who never seem to run out ideas. The ensemble often seems on the edge of falling apart but somehow always in complete control, shifting tempo at the drop of Zorn’s whimsical conducting hands.
It’s also wonderfully recorded, with gorgeous tones and lively dynamics on every track. Truly an audiophile quality recording.
