"Less is more”, the saying goes when it comes to music. I’ve always gone with the less tortured logic of “more is more” but I can see this can be problematic. I love adding in more and more ideas into a five-piece band running a sequencer but the fight for a better experience for the listener means that many of those themes and sounds that I include aren’t really apparent.
“Voyages” is about trying to display elements of the parent album “Passages” that you might not even have realised existed. It’s also an insight into how the album was made, some tracks (I now remember) were sung without headphones, just live, in a room, through speakers. Those tracks should now be obvious. What would Jesus Jones sound like as a 3 piece? Or without guitars? Or without sampling? And what insight into whatever we do next will those discoveries provide? The alternative mixes are those insights and more.
The demos included here came as a revelation to me. Looking at creation dates on some of the files shows some work on the album, albeit in brief sketches, dates as far back as 2004! Key changes, new sections added, old sections binned, changes of instrumentation, different vocals - there’s far more in the vaults, and now on this album, than I had realised took place.
“Voyages” isn’t just a remix album. It’s an accompaniment to “Passages”, a way of explaining and illustrating that album that also, hopefully, provides enjoyment in its own right.

1) HTEGD 2004 Sun and Moon demo
This is only just related to the How's This Even Going Down you know, but nonetheless - it's an essential stepping stone. Very early doodle.
2) Where are all the dreams? Demo
The last song to be recorded for "Passages", and a final rock out. Here's an early demo that has that ethic within it.
Some variation inlyrics and a very early vocal attempt.
3) Suck It Up Sunflower Jam Demo 2015
Recognisable but only just. Another song that could have gone in a very different direction. Intriguing that it didn't.
4) Grateful Ratboy Demo # 1
It’s hard for me not to wince when i hear myself on these early doodles - but in the faltering steps this track took, at the beginning of its life, you can hopefully hear where it was trying to end up.
5) Rounding Out...Cranked Jam Demo 2015
Another early, tentative sketch. You can hear elements that remained in the final version in between an awful lot of stuff that got jettisoned. This could quite easily have ended up as a completely different song.
6) No More Roads - Demo
An old tune gets disemboweled, and another one emerges. This first stab at "Fall" was all about finding the spirit of the song. It lacked a theme, the lyrics would come later.
7) ODAAT Urboid Rat Demo 2015
Another demo that shows a quantum leap or two appeared before something recognisable in the final version appeared.
8) Stripped Demo
Revisiting "Stripped" for the "Doubt" anniversary tour meant that a rewrite suddenly took on a life of its own. This was the sign that pointed us towards where we stand now.
9) Suck It Up AC Dubstep Demo
It was always intended as an onstage rocker, this mix pushes that idea a little bit further.
10) So Welcome Rodent Symphony Demo 2015
Apart from the words, this is largely in place, just very much more basic and waiting to flower.
11) Wet December Demo # 1 Acoustic
Or "Chemistry" as you know it. And I do sing loud, by the way. There's some lyric salad going on here, searching for some vowels and consonants that will let me hook the tune onto the instrumental.
12) Grateful В Vox ReMix
A good example of all the gems you can find when those pesky lead vocals are eliminated.
13) Fall, No Drum Mix
Not done out of spite towards Gen, it just allows the orchestral and non-electronic aspects to come through more.
14) So Welcome Orchestral Remix
In its creation the parts that came last, added on top, are the only bits that remain. Another one for the Unplugged session!
15) Where are all the dreams, Batman Mix
Coming at this from the other end of the scale. Batman? You figure it out (and that IS in the final version!)
