Первым опубликованным рассказом писателя стала «Paranoid Fantasy #1», опубликованная в августовском номере журнала «American Atheist» за 1975 год.
В 1984 году этот дебютный рассказ писателя попал в антологию «100 Great Fantasy Short Short Stories», одним из составителей которой был сам Айзек Азимов.
После окончания школы Уотт-Эванс решил пойти по стопам родителей поступив в Принстонский университет. Через некоторое время он сделал перерыв в учебе поработав на фабрике по производству лестниц, в супермаркете, ресторане и коммивояжером. Все это время он пытался писать и публиковаться, но безуспешно. Через некоторое время он окончательно оставил учебу — в 1980 году ему удалось опубликовать роман «The Lure of the Basilisk», ставший началом четырехтомного цикла «Lords of Dus». С тех пор Лоуренс Уотт-Эванс — профессиональный писатель.
Лоуренс Уотт-Эванс живет в Мэриленде, он женат, у него двое детей. Одним из своих самых любимых писателей он называет Терри Пратчетта, замечая при этом, что это во многом зависит от настроения, а вообще он читает не только фэнтези и НФ, но и мистику, исторические романы и «морские» истории. Он является членом Ассоциации авторов научной фантастики и фэнтези Америки, совладельцем небольшого бара и ресторана, а также — магазина комиксов; с 1994 по 1996 год был президентом Ассоциации авторов романов ужасов, получил премию «Хьюго» в 1987 году за рассказ «Почему я ушел из «Ночного гамбургера» («Why I Left Harry's All-Night Hamburgers»).

PROLOGUE“I am weary of all this death and dying.”
The speaker was a huge armor-clad figure almost seven feet in height, standing at the narrow mouth of a small cave near the top of a snowy and rubble-strewn hillside; even from a distance an observer would have seen the fading light of the setting sun glinting a baleful red from his eyes, marking him as something other than human. He was speaking to a bent, crouching creature clad in tatters who stood inside the cave’s mouth, at the edge of the impenetrable gloom of the interior, her face and form only faintly visible in the dim twilight; she was hunched and humpbacked, shriveled and bent with age. Her face was twisted and broken, her teeth gone, one of her golden eyes squinting horribly, yet she was plainly of the same race as the tall warrior.
“Death is everywhere;” the decrepit creature replied.

Part One: WirikidorChapter OneThe marsh stank, with a sharp, briny stench that seemed to fill Valder’s head. He stared out across the maze of tall grass and shallow water for a long moment and then reluctantly marched onward, into it. The ground gave beneath him; his boot sank past the ankle in gray-brown muck. He hissed an obscenity, then smiled weakly at his own annoyance and slogged forward.
The enemy, he knew, was no more than an hour behind him. The marsh was nothing but a minor inconvenience by comparison.
To his left lay the open sea, and to his right was endless empty forest that was probably full of northern patrols and sentinels, human or otherwise. Behind him somewhere were the three northerners who had been pursuing him for the past four days. Ahead of him, wet and green and stinking, lay the coastal marshes.
