Morning Rory was McGoldrick's first release as a solo artist. No need to go into background details on his performing career before or since this
release other than to say there are very few top Folk/Trad artists in Britain or Ireland who haven't called on his services and he has been for a
number of years on the TransAtlantic Sessions house band. His own recordings are all-instrumental and if you've stumbled on this review by chance
his main instruments are flute and uileann pipes and on this recording he shows his versatility by chipping in with bodhran and drums.
Helping McGoldrick out are Manus Lunney and Ed Boyd on string instruments (some lovely sounding Bouzouki on a couple of tracks) and Phil Cunningham
and Donald Shaw contribute keyboards. Alan Kelly plays accordion on the lovely "The History Man" with Mike playing low whistle on one of the
strongest tracks on the album. Manchester-born McGoldrick has an effortless flowing style that has earned massive respect from trad and folk
musicians on both sides of the Irish Sea and many see this debut as his strongest release as it's easily the most traditional of his recordings to
date. That said he still utilises percussion and keyboards as a subtle background - check out the "Knocknamoe Jig / Trip to Brittany for a fine
example.
Best known for his superb flute playing McGoldrick opens this selection doubling up on flute and Uileann Pipes on "Jenny Picking Cockles". Fans of
the great Bothy Band will be reminded of the Paddy Keenan / Matt Molloy axis, especially with one Lunney (Manus) on bouzouki recreating the sound
of another Lunney (Donal) in a brilliant opening statement. "Morning Rory" comprises a very varied set of tunes, with a clever arrangement of a
lovely slow air - "My Mind will never be Easy" - with tasty reverb and keyboard sounds which then melds into a delightful slip jig with accordion
entering the scene. McGoldrick's ability to arrange tunes with imaginative variations is something that places him a class above any would be
challengers.
The album finishes on a rousing note with 3 foot tapping reels - "Gan Ainm" (without name) is unaccompanied before bodhran enters for the 2nd tune
and the same set sees bouzouki added to the mix. The penultimate number "The Maid of Monsico" uses a similar unaccompanied flute introducing the
fleet-fingered reel before strings again add spice and use different stereo channels at the tune change.The "Dub Reel" brings the set to a most
satisfying completion with tin whistle leading off.
The quite sparse backing and clever arrangements really highlight McGoldricks clean fingering and almost soundless breath control. The "Dub Reel"
hints at things to come with wah-wah guitar giving a very contemporary feel to the music. The album closes as it started with uileann pipes
doubling up with flute on a lively romp. Overall this is a brilliantly reassured debut release by one of the greatest traditional talents of this,
or any other, generation. My only gripe is a very personal regret that there wasn't more piping on show but otherwise this is very easy to
enthusiastically endorse.
