Об исполнителе
Georg Buljo born in 1969 in Oslo, Norway, is a singer, musician, multiinstrumentalist, composer and producer. He studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo while starting the experimental alternative rock band Locomotives which was his fulltime profession from 1994 untill 2000. Locomotives toured heavily USA and Norway and played support for acts as The Cure, David Bowie, Supergrass and The Allman Brothers. Locomotives released a string of EP´s and three full-length albums, plus one album under the bandname Amundsen (2001). Georg Buljos collaboration with Niko Valkeapää started in 1995 but the project escalated with the Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) awarded album «Niko Valkeapää» in 2003. Buljo and Valkeapää have done five highly acclaimed albums and are working live as a duo and in different band constellations. Buljo has always been interested in music that normally goes under the radar of commercial radio. His facination for traditional music in general, and Saami/Norwegian in particular, has been there from the start, growing up with Saami father and Norwegian mother. Georg Buljo has a focus on human communication through his music and he thinks that song, melodies and rhythms are some of the most important ways to do this. On the ground of Saami and Norwegian tradition Buljo builds his music and works close to the most basic musicianship and expression of human moods and feelings. Saami cultural heritage is the keystone to his musicmaking and the yoik is the pillar in his vocal expression.
Solo Album
He has released one solo album «Saxapahaw» (2011) and has produced and contributed to a string of recordings for Scandinavian artists in many different genres, including traditional, folk and pop. As a result of this he is five times winner og Spellemann, the Norwegian Grammy and has another four nominations.
Sideman, musician and composer
As a sideman, musician and composer Buljo has made himself a reputation and a career for over twenty years but since 2010 he has focused more on his own projects and the yoik/vocals. On his debut album «Saxapahaw», named after a North-American native tribe, he explores and experiments with his Saami musical heritage. His vocal style tends to lean towards yoik (joik), the traditional Saami way of singing, and one of the oldest vocal traditions in Europe. Buljo mixes the yoik with different musical influences from all around the world and the music focuses on deep drones, soundscapes, framedrums and sounds from different percussion- and stringed instruments.
Commissoned work
Georg Buljo has composed commissoned work, and -concerts with his own bands and also explored the Saami vocal possibilities with Mari Boine Trio in additional to playing guitars and percussion. He plays in Mari Boines bands, tours with the Saami singer/poet Niko Valkeapää, has his own label Duippidit with focus on Saami music and runs a recording studio in Oslo, Norway.
Producer
As a producer Buljo has worked with Nordic artists such as Mari Boine, Niko Valkeapää, Lars Ánte Kuhmunen, Lars Bremnes, Johan Anders Bær, Kirsten Bråten Berg, Biret Risten Sara to name a few. Georg Buljo has also composed music for film, TV, theatre and dance.
Об альбоме
Buljo mixes his yoik with world and traditional music. He has released solo material, done commisioned work, composed for film and has produced and played on a great amount of albums for Scandinavian traditional, folk and pop artists.
Georg Buljos debut album from 2011. Saxapahaw is a village in North Carolina, USA, where Buljo lived for a short period, close to the Sissipahaw river that is named after a first nation tribe. Buljo sings and yoiks and plays all instruments on this recording. A late solo debut and a milestone for him as an artist.
