Imagine that you visit Odessa, the pulsating harbor city on the Black Sea, stroll down the Potemkin Stairs and along the fashionable boulevards until you finally land in morbid alleys and discover a bar. A woman's voice is heard from an open door in the dim light. She sings in English at times—you seem to recognize a standard—as well as in her Ukrainian mother tongue at times, and sometimes she emits strange sounds or ones that sound like an instrument without lapsing into old, well-known scat patterns of the American school. Interesting. Then there is the band. A formation that clearly demonstrates that is comes from the jazz field but wants to shift all limits, acts harmoniously and remarkably densely, creates a crackling rhythmic atmosphere and yet can swing like the devil. You listen from the outside. At some point you go in, sit and stay until the last note has faded. The magic has got you completely spellbound, and it even continues to affect your for a long time afterward. You might have been listening to Tamara Lukasheva. The 27-year-old singer has not lived in the city of her birth for a long time, but instead in Cologne since 2010. Despite that, the repertoire of her debut CD sounds as if she had never gone away from home. This recording continues the Jazz thing Next Generation series in its 61st release and transfers the ambiance of the bar in Odessa without any frictional losses into a studio in a Cologne Loft at the same time. Everything that this vivacious woman does arises from an idea that already originated during her piano and singing lessons when she was a child, when studying as a teenager and as a young woman in her jobs as a soprano in Ukrainian opera houses: to enter a new, not yet explored world of sound. However, loose tones first whirled around in her head, meaningless fragments of a song or arrangements, disordered puzzle. To arrange all this, Tamara Lukasheva had to embark onto the shaky ground of composition and arrangement. Of course, she loves classical jazz, its openness and the interactive bridges, such as in the BuJazzO vocal ensemble as well as in the WDR Big Band. However, she also had a powerful urge to combine things that nobody would actually put in one basket in this sense. For example, Tamara mixes folkloric elements of their homeland with the arrangements of modern jazz and contemporary classical music. Where the air in the room normally becomes thin, she throws open all windows with amazing courage. She succeeds on one hand because she does not leave anything to chance, but instead follows a detailed motif that requires a strict and wisely planned development and yet surprisingly creates a lot of room for solo excursions. On the other hand, she succeeds because the band with Sebastian Scobel (piano), Jakob Kuhn (bass) and Dominik Mahnig (drums)—all friends from the Cologne University of Music as well as the guest musicians Shannon Barnet (trombone) and Liora Rips (violin)—fit in perfectly in the sense of the leader. The band already won The Young German Jazz Award in Osnabrück in 2014, and they also won second place at the "Keep an Eye Jazz Award" in Amsterdam in 2015. These are not the only distinctions that Tamara Lukasheva can call her own. She won first prize at the Master-Jam-Fest in Odessa in 2013 as well as at Finsterwald Jazz/Pop Contest in 2012 and the international competition "Voicingers" in Poland in 2011. There were also great reviews for "Matria", her duo CD with trumpet player Matthias Schriefl in 2015, where she remained faithful to her philosophy of wonderful non-conformism in every note. “Patchwork of Time“ is also composed of puzzle pieces such as the songs “Rada”, “Berdovichko”, “Sirii Gusi”, “Ich Weiss Nicht”, “Gockl Am Hof”, “Song For Mama And Papa”, “Integration” and “Alone Together” (previously mentioned standard). In the hands of an exceptional artist such as Tamara Lukasheva, they join together somehow in an irresistibly logical way to become a clear, visionary image of a modern, country-overlapping jazz philosophy. A patchwork of this era.
