For 35 years (and counting) the Mud Bay Blues Band has been electrifying audiences with their eclectic and original style of Rhythm and Blues. Surviving more than their share of trials and tribulations along the way, they have earned a well-deserved reputation as “The Band That Won’t Go Away”–much to the delight of their devoted fans.
This ain’t your average blues band.
Founded in the wilds of South Surrey way back in 1978 by lead singer / blues harp master Mud Bay Slim (a.k.a. Harold Arnold), the band’s hard-edged, high-voltage, in-your-face approach–which they dubbed “Neo-Yardbirdism”–immediately distinguished them from their more conservative counterparts in the Vancouver R&B scene. Throughout the years they have forged a distinctive style, playing the blues their way: uncompromisingly unconventionally, no apologies for liberties taken.
A spin through their 2007 album, “Death, Taxes and the Mud Bay Blues Band (Three Things That Won‘t Go Away)” reveals the diverse influences informing their sound: classic Chicago blues, country, zydeco, barrel-house boogie … And on their follow-up album, “Mudified” (released in 2009) the band continued and expanded this trend, with 100% original compositions featuring a wealth of styles finding common ground inside the songs, all interpreted and incorporated the Mud Bay way.
Through mishaps and misfortunes (including the untimely deaths of guitarists James Lougheed and Peter Draper) the Mud Bay Blues Band has persevered, turning adversity into opportunity and letting hardships nurture creativity. Now with more than three decades of dues paid, they have earned respect and praise from such blues legends as James Cotton (“Just like playing with family”) and the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn (“Mud Bay…? More fun!”)
The Mud Bay Blues Band, featuring “Legend In His Spare Time” Mud Bay Slim (“King of the Mud Bay Delta Blues”) and his long time cohorts, Murphy Farrell (drums), Mark Branscombe (guitar), Randall T. Carpenter (guitar, steel guitar, mandolin) and Bob “Beaudine” Petterson (bass), do it their own way. Always have, always will.
This definitely ain’t your average blues band.
