Graphics by Alexander Neuwahl I am always amazed when a musician I've never or rarely heard of hands me his disc(s) and it turns out to be some long lost treasure. Thus is the case with Italian drum wiz Alessio Riccio, who stopped in our store last month and gave us five discs of various collaborations with musicians known and unknown (to me). Besides drums, percussion and tapes, Alessio plays something called The Metalanguage Unit, a sonorous sound sculpture. Besides the two illustrious downtowners listed above, the only other name I am familiar with is pianist Stefano Battaglia, who has records on Splasch. The music is lusciously recorded and well balanced. Spacious guitars, percussion, odd samples of radio broadcasts and other disembodied voices, minimal narration, piano give way to tight sections of intriguing jazz/prog/rock. Both female vocalists have warm voices, sing sounds without lyrics and are used just to enhance occasional segments.
