Warren Wolf, born in Baltimore in 1979, is the first young jazz vibraphonist with star quality to burst onto the scene since Stefon Harris. For his sophomore release from the Japanese M&I label, the producer surrounded him with an awesome set of talents -- pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, and the results are explosive!
Wolf acknowledges his influences from the giants of jazz vibraphone. The modal, post-bop "From Day To Day" written by Miller and the classic "Maiden Voyage" are a nod to Bobby Hutcherson, while "Chelsea Bridge" and "Bags' Groove" reminds us the bluesy Milt Jackson. Wolf contributed three originals: The fast-tempo "The Wire" and "Who's Afraid Of The Big Black Wolf" are full of kinetic energy, and the melancholic "Katrina" has a stately and bluesy feel reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
This great CD successfully showcases Wolf's promising talent as both vibraphonist and composer, and the inspired contributions from Miller, Whitaker and Watts are truly impressive. The punchy, powerful sound, engineered by the great Jim Anderson, further adds value to this excellent CD. Strongly recommended!
