Sophie Alour
Sophie Alour (24 décembre 1974) est une saxophoniste française de jazz. Formée initialement à la clarinette, elle s'exprime principalement au saxophone ténor. Débute en 2000 avec des musiciens comme Stéphane Belmondo, Christophe Dal Sasso puis Rhoda Scott, enregistrant depuis 2005 ses propres albums dans des formats différents, proposant compositions personnelles et improvisation libre.
Sophie Alour s'initie à la clarinette à partir de 13 ans, dans une école de musique à Quimper. L'apprentissage du saxophone débute plus tard, vers 19 ans, principalement en autodidacte et lors des cours suivis dans les écoles parisiennes de jazz et de musiques, le CIM et l'IACP.
La jeune saxophoniste débute véritablement sur la scène jazz en 2000 en participant au nouveau groupe nommé le Vintage Orchestra. Cette année-là, elle s'associe également au trompettiste Stéphane Belmondo pour former un sextet et se produit dans différents clubs parisiens. Elle participe aussi à l'orchestre de Christophe Dal Sasso.
Sophie Alour intègre en 2004 un quartet de musiciennes, dirigé par l'organiste Rhoda Scott, en compagnie d'Airelle Besson et de Julie Saury, ce qui lui permet de développer davantage son jeu au saxophone. Au cours de l'année, elle attire aussi l'attention du trompettiste Wynton Marsalis qui choisit de la faire participer à son orchestre. Elle est également sollicitée pour participer à un projet du batteur Aldo Romano et se fait remarquer par son interprétation sur la grande scène de Jazz à Vienne en 2004.

L'année suivante elle fait paraître Insulaire, un premier album en leader qui est bien apprécié par la critique. Elle collabore à nouveau avec le groupe Vintage Orchestra sur l'enregistrement de l'album Thad.
En 2006, elle participe à l'enregistrement de l'album Ouverture de Christophe Dal Sasso et des frères Belmondo. En 2007, la saxophoniste accompagne le quintet du pianiste Alexandre Saada lors des enregistrements de son album Be Where You Are. Cette année-là, elle publie son deuxième album Uncaged qui reçoit de bonnes évaluations par la critique. Pendant 2 ans elle se produit dans différentes villes en France ainsi qu'à l'étranger. En 2010, Sophie Alour présente son troisième album intitulé Opus 3, un trio en compagnie du contrebassiste Yoni Zelnik et du batteur Karl Jannuska, deux musiciens présents sur son album précédent. L'année suivante elle participe à l'enregistrement de l'album Prétextes de Christophe Dal Sasso.
En 2012 la saxophoniste fait paraître un nouvel album intitulé La géographie des rêves. Sophie Alour forme un nouveau quintet avec deux musiciens qu'elle connait bien, Yoann Loustalot et Nicolas Moreaux, et deux nouveaux Frédéric Pasqua à la batterie et Stéphan Carraci au vibraphone.
Formée à la clarinette dans son adolescence, Sophie Alour choisit sur ses trois premiers albums de s'exprimer au saxophone ténor. Sur l'album La géographie des rêves, elle interprète pour la première fois certains morceaux à la clarinette basse, une autre approche qui complète son mode d'expression. Enregistrant en trio, quartet ou quintet, les morceaux qu'elle interprète peuvent être entièrement ou partiellement composés, offrant aussi la place à l'improvisation pour le groupe, sans chercher à reproduire des codes ou les formats habituels du jazz. Son jeu au saxophone se caractérise par une posture souvent posée, une gestuelle simple sans déhanché ou coups de menton. L'auteur Philippe Carles mentionne qu'elle est «à l'aise dans les graves élégants» et qualifie le son de son instrument de «serein mais jamais dénué de grain».

French saxophonist Sophie Alour's Opus 3 is not only her third album as a leader, it is also her first in a trio setting. The recipient of the French Django D'or award, Alour departs from the electric intensity of her previous release, Uncaged (Nocturne, 2007), to explore her voice as an instrumentalist. The 11 originals are tone poems bearing heavy western classical influences, with occasional peppering of other styles that showcase the leader on both tenor and soprano saxophones.
"Eloge du lointain" for example, has hints of Caribbean rhythms, with Alour's rapid-fire, staccato tenor enhancing the island ambience created by Karl Januska's rhythmic drums. Much like Sonny Rollins ' classic "St Thomas," she extends her improvisation far beyond the tune, although her sound is not as brassy as the legendary saxophonist, but rounder and more fluid.
There is not much distinction made on these tracks between the composed and the improvised. Alour's solos build on a basic foundation, but the final result is a musical construct that is quite imaginative and far-reaching. Her angular soprano on "Mystère et boule de gomme!" climbs logically up the scales and chords driven by Januska's propulsive drumming and anchored by Yoni Zelnik's resonant bass.
Alour's warm tenor blows softly over Zelnik's undulating notes on "Grekerna," its melancholic melody bearing hints of Eastern European music, while Zelnik's atonal pizzicato carries a conversation with Alour's unpredictable yet never out of place musical ideas on "Ode à Arthur Cravan." The stylistic angularity continues on "Haunted," featuring a lengthy tenor solo that is quite mellifluous with Januska's hyper-rhythmic drums bringing a rock sensibility to the piece.
Alour's fast lines add bop flavor to "Karlston," while the delightful cacophony that ends the march-like "Caprice" reflects Alour's more avant-garde side. The classical influences are most heard on the serpentine romantic song "En ton absence" and atmospheric and explorative sonata, "Petite anatomie du temps qui passe..."
Opus 3 is a more personal and more mature recording than Alour's previous two; although it lacks the energy and the excitement of her Uncaged, it is an intimate portrait of an artist with great promise.

For his fourth album, Sophie Alour back with a new quintet and music of invention and musicality remarkable, fascinating both for its great expressive force and by his incredible sense of balance. Served by such a voluble vibraphone that gives a great foundation and a great trumpet, the music grows happily. Beyond his usual tenor sax, Sophie Alour also proves to clarinets (clarinet and bass clarinet), further accentuating the impression of variety ..In this album has any compound Alour Sophie and her immense talent is present on every track of this CD. When she does not play tenor saxophone sophie plays clarinet or bass clarinet and is wonderfully accompanied by Yoann Loustalot on trumpet and flugelhorn, Stéphan Caracci on vibes and percussion, by Pasqua Frederick on drums and percussion and Nicolas Moreaux on bass. Sophie Alour is very young and has not finished surprising us.

Entertainment, jubilation, and the pleasure of disguising oneself primed at the birth of Sophie Alour’s fifth opus «Shaker». On this record, she gathers original compositions from different periods of her life. Some - like «Shaker» or «Joke» - have been written for Rhoda Scott, and seen by the author as a tribute to the sixties, those pivotal years for the first steps of Funk (Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith...). To the contrary, others are more Rock n’ Roll oriented and created for different instruments: drums/bass/sax trio or piano quartet. And yet they have been readjusted for this new ensemble and glorified by the organ, which adds something of an overwhelming flavour and a certain « modern dandy » style.
This album, very rhythmic and fast paced, reveals itself to be full of joy, self-mockery and references to the epic history of Jazz. For this adventure, Sophie Alour joined forces with two of her pals, organ player Frederic Nardin and drummer Frédéric Pasqua.
The latter distinguished himself on the previous record « La Géographie des rêves » (Geography of dreams), whereas Frédéric Nardin is a new recruit to her universe. However, both are first class playmates for this new project. In addition, Sophie Alour also gives a primary role to the soprano and thus adds a new colour to her form of expression.
