Note:
From the introductory liner notes by John Hammond: The era may have been called "The Roaring Twenties", but the music in the Thesaurus of Classic Jazz is sparkling, sophisticated and somewhat subdued. The extraordinary liner notes, by Dick DuPage and Frank Driggs, indicate liquor relieved the frustrations the various musicians had playing commercial music in the big bands and studio groups of the day. However, little frustration is evident in the music of any of the volumes. (...) The Thesaurus of Jazz includes the cream of early improvised jazz in one of the most comprehensive collections ever published on long playing records.

Technical note:
This music was originally recorded in the 1920′s using both electrical and acoustical processes. For the acoustical process (all of the songs on LP number 4), musicians gathered around a horn which was connected to a recording machine which etched the vibrations coming from the horn directly into wax. The sound has very little frequency range and dynamics. For the electrical process (LPs 1-3), the horn was replaced by a microphone, which yielded much better sound, but the recording was still being made directly to wax. Therefore there is surface noise audible all throughout, which originates not from this vinyl pressing, but from the original master discs. Tape recording only began in the late 1940′s, many many years after theses discs were recorded. Now, I’m sure most of you knew this already, but I thought it was worth mentioning for the uninitiated.
The original discs were then transferred onto tape for this 1959 LP release and they did a great job at it. The original frequency range is all there (including the surface noise) and the usual adding of reverb is kept to a minimum or non-existent. The music has unbelievable presence.
