Об исполнителе (группе)
1.Annbjørg Lien (born October 15, 1971 in Ålesund and raised in Mauseidvåg, Norway) is a Norwegian musician, playing the hardingfele (Hardanger fiddle), violin, and nyckelharpa, and married to the keyboardist Bjørn Ole Rasch.
She first came to national prominence in 1986. Shortly afterwards got a recording deal with the Heilo label and released her first album on that label in 1988. She has received numerous awards, both in Norway and the Nordic countries, including Gammleng Prize in classical folk music in 2004 and Hilmar Prize in 2006.
In her work, Lien often combines traditional Norwegian music with jazz and rock music. She has traveled to Africa, Asia, Australia, Argentina, Bhutan, Greenland, Iceland, Sri Lanka, North America, and other parts of Europe, and worked with musicians from many countries. In 2006 she performed on Loreena McKennitt's album An Ancient Muse playing nyckelharpa and played Hardanger fiddle on Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's album Imeall in 2008.
Her 2008 project Waltz With Me brought together American fiddler, guitarist and singer Bruce Molsky, Swedish violist Mikael Marin and Canadian cellist Christine Hanson for a concert commissioned by the Telemark Festival. The project included a CD of the same name. With Arve Moen Bergset and Steinar Ofsdal, she is a member of the folk music group Bukkene Bruse.
Lien is part of the fiddle ensemble, String Sisters, which formed in 2000 and consists of six string players from different countries, who released their début album Live in 2007.

The traditional fiddle styles of Norway have been brought up to date by Annbjørg Lien. Although she initially balanced classical and Norwegian folk music, Lien has attracted global attention since deciding to concentrate on the musical traditions of Norway. According to Folk on Tap, Lien is gifted with a "sparkling style of playing and the rich tones of her hardanger and keyed fiddles, combined with her ability to write catching melodies."
While she's garnered acclaim for her solo performances and recordings, Lien has been involved in a number of interesting projects. In addition to collaborating with Heshoo Beshoo of South Africa, the Chieftains of Ireland, and Catriona MacDonald of the Shetland Islands, Lien is a founding member of the trad rock group Bukkene Bruse (translated; the Billy Goats Gruff). The band, which also features Arve Moen Bergset, Bjørn Ole Rasch, and Steinar Ofsdal, came together in 1987. Six years later, Bukkene Bruse toured Japan, Germany, Spain, and the United States as the official band of the 1994 Winter Olympics. The group performed during the closing ceremonies of the Olympic games in Lillehammer. In 1994, Bukkene Bruse received the prestigious Spelemannprisen, Norway's top recording honor. Bukkene Bruse have continued to serve as ambassadors of the Save the Children Foundation. In 1999, Lien joined with Rasch to compose and record the score for a musical theater piece, Stalubursa.
The winner of six Norwegian national championships in traditional music and the winner of a national championship and a Nordic title in dance music, Lien grew up surrounded by music. Taught to play the fiddle by her father, she strengthened her skills during visits to Norway's most influential fiddlers.
Lien launched her professional career at a very young age. Recording for the first time at the age of 12, she was only 15 when she appeared on a nationally broadcast television show on NRK-TV (Norwegian National Television).
Although she plays the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) and conventional violin, Lien has made her greatest impression on the hardanger fiddle. Shorter than a standard fiddle with a flatter bridge and fingerboard, the hardanger fiddle gets its unusual sound by being played two strings at a time.
Lien enhanced her international reputation with her participation on the Henry Kaiser and David Lindley celebration of Norwegian music, Sweet Sunny North, in 1994. Although she used jazz musicians on her debut solo album, Annbjørg, released in 1989, her subsequent albums have focused more on her traditional roots. During an interview in 1999, she described her sixth solo album, Baba Yaga, as "almost like a concept album, almost like the old dramatic nature of the tunes back home."
Lien has collaborated on several projects with Catriona MacDonald. In addition to touring the United Kingdom as a duo in 1994, the two fiddlers joined with fiddlers Natalie MacMaster (Canada), Liz Carroll (United States), Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh (Ireland), and Liz Noels (United States) for a tour that began in January 2000.
Об альбоме (сборнике)
1. It's been quite a while since the world at large heard anything from Norwegian fiddler Annbjørg Lien. This international lineup documents the work she wrote for the Telemark Festival, a series of pieces, both instrumentals and songs. Lien herself sticks to the hardanger fiddle, and the music has a curious mix of her native country with American old-time, where the accents are provided by Bruce Molsky. His playing is wonderful, although his singing doesn't compare with guest Kirsten Bråten Berg. There are wonderful interactions between the instruments, and a lot of the music takes unusual turns, as on "Masques" and "The Old Car," but never more so than on "Dancing the Years All Away," with its slightly lurching rhythm where the melody and the vocal lines almost pull away from each other in a mesmerizing fashion. It's not as obviously forward-looking as some of Lien's other work, and here she becomes part of the ensemble, not the star, but in its own quieter way, it's just as adventurous and satisfying. Waltz with Me was born when Annbjørg Lien, one of Norway’s most accomplished musicians, was commissioned last year to compose new music for the prestigious Telemark Festival in Bø, Norway. She responded by first assembling a quartet that included herself on Hardanger fiddle, Bruce Molsky on violin and vocals, Christine Hanson on cello and Mikael Marin on viola. She then wrote (with their varied skills and musical backgrounds in mind) a varied and beautiful set of tradition-based tunes and songs that reflect her eclectic attitude towards the musical style. The strong chemistry between the members of the group was apparent within the first five minutes and the concert in Bø turned out to be a huge success and a wonderful experience for the musicians and audience alike. Soon after, the group went into the studio and recorded these pieces.
Waltz With Me unites four internationally respected musicians and their fascinating traditions in a genre-transcending musical melting pot. “Whether moaning like late-period Led Zeppelin or humming like a hungry North Country mosquito, Lien’s hardanger fiddle is guaranteed to inspire surreal dreams.” Atlantic Monthly

Annbjørg Lien is probably the best known Hardanger fiddle players of modern times. It’s almost twenty years ago that she recorded her first solo CD, the first careful step towards international success. It was her 1994 album Felefeber that started to get her flame rising, and the 1999 folk rock album Baba yaga made sure her name got known in worldwide. Besides her solo career she is also part of the successful band Bukkene bruse. A group that presents music that is deeply rooted the Norwegian tradition and ‘must have’ for all serious fans of Norwegian folk music. Now, in 2008, Annbjшrg Lien has released a new solo project called waltz with me. It’s actually a project commissioned by the famous Telemark festival in 2007. Together with Bruce Molsky on (Hardanger) fiddle, vocals and guitar, Mikael Marin on viola and Christine Hanson on cello, Lien plays ten self written compositions. Together with special guest Kirsten Brеten Berg, one of the grand ladies of Norwegian folk, this quartet recorded a remarkable CD. It’s no longer pure tradition or folk-rock, it’s a mixture of contemporary music with traditional Norwegian and English influences. The traveller shows this mixture the best way. Starting with a beautiful string intro, it turns out to be a song, sung in both Norwegian, by Brеten Berg, and English, by Molsky. This combination of languages works really well and will probably help Lien to reach an even bigger international audience. What follows is Sula mountain a furious instrumental piece on the string instruments. Than The fiddle a song with lyrics from the famous fiddler Knut Buen, again sung in Norwegian and English. In Home east Lien created a more mystical atmosphere, while a tune like waltz with me is more careful and fragile. These are just some examples of songs from this beautiful album.I love her fresh and open minded way of playing and composing. I think Lien shows to be the right person to bring Norwegian folk in a modern, acoustic way. It never gets boring and this album gets better and better each time I listen to it. This album by Annbjorg Lien will probably not jump off the shelves at you. Most people who are not well up on the top fiddle players and musicians of the circuit will look at the cover and the lyrics in Norwegian and may decide to pass on. Theirs will be the loss because this is a strong and intense album born of collaboration from some of the strongest talents of the contemporary folk scene. The tracks will be unfamiliar and sometimes the openings may sound a bit experimental, but they will reward any listener giving them a friendly ear. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of a collection of master players playing even less than familiar tunes, think of how more well-known groups like The Chieftains make the familiar sound even more resonant. That is what happens on many of the tracks on offer here. You may not know the tune but the expertise, the depth and the pure bravado of the performances will enthrall and seduce you. If you want a quick flavour of the album give a listen to the title track. It's hard to go wrong with a waltz. 'The Old Car" is another interesting track that gives a good idea of the rest of the album. Waltz With Me is a bit experimental, but then how else can we experience new music?
