Kraken's first full-length release, 'still life' features four different versions of Tim Feeney's work of the same name. The group commissioned Feeney to compose the work in 2012, and premiered it in early 2013.
'still life' is a loosely structured exploration of sounds, in which each performer is equipped with a variety of implements to produce tones on a single drum. As the four drums interact, changing soundscapes are created, occurring over the course of four "scenes" or movements.
This album includes four versions of 'still life,' each recorded in a single take. Each track features a new set of four drums, as well as a changing palette of implements such as sticks, broom heads, credit cards, coins, and bouncy balls. Additionally, as the album progresses, the performers stray further away from the loose guidelines of the piece, and closer to complete improvisation.
