Valeria Proaño was born in Quito, Ecuador of Cuban mother and Ecuadorian father. At the age of 15 she started working as a professional musician singing in different club bands and recording jingles. After graduating from high school she decided to relocate to Miami to pursue her life's passion; music.
Valeria began her professional musical studies at Miami Dade College where she first studied classical voice. While in college she was surrounded by many jazz musicians who greatly influenced her perception of music. She continued her studies at the world-renowned jazz program at the University of Miami where she was a scholarship recipient (including two by the Grammy-Award winning Latin artist Jon Secada). Ms. Proano, a Downbeat Student Music Award Winner, earned her Bachelor's degree in Studio Music & Jazz Vocal Performance in 2002.
For the past 15 years, Valeria has been performing professionally in jazz clubs, hotels and diverse venues all over the world; Maduro Jazz Club in Tokyo, Japan, QJazz, Nardis and JC's jazz clubs in Istanbul, Turkey, Borgata, Tropicana and Taj Mahal casinos in Atlantic City, jazz clubs and cafes in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Belgium, Portugal, Holland, Hong Kong, Beijing, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, New York City and Quito, just to name a few.
She has successfully led her own groups on two European tours and often performs in multiple private and corporate events worldwide; she even appeared at a special reception for the Tour de France in 2001. In 2008, Valeria concluded a series of successful concerts all over Turkey as the featured artist on a special program on the Turkish National Radio and Television Corporation.
Besides her performing career, Valeria has been recording jingles for television and radio as well as studio projects for other artists.
For many years now, Ms. Proano has been teaching voice and piano as well as directing choirs in different schools and non-profit organizations in the US.
As a musician's vocalist who is not just a singer but also an accomplished pianist Valeria becomes an integral part of the band or easily adjusts to become a solo act, singing and accompanying herself.
Valeria's extraordinary versatility with various musical styles has enabled her to perform with many artists in diverse genres through out the years. Her vast knowledge of Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, Pop and Latin American styles, as well as her multi-lingual (Spanish, English Portuguese and French) abilities make her a much in demand musician.
Valeria's first album "Retrato en Blanco y Negro" was released on December 2010 to raving reviews. Produced by Carlomagno Araya and featuring an amazing line up of world famous artists including Nestor Torres, Ed Calle, Victor Mendoza, Ray Vega, Troy Roberts, Mike Orta and Jamie Ousley, "Retrato en Blanco y Negro" is airing on radios across the world including the USA, Japan, Costa Rica, and Venezuela.
Valeria's extensive repertoire includes mostly songs from the great American songbook, jazz standards, traditional and contemporary Brazilian and Latin Standards.
