In the narrow margin of reality where music ends and love begins exists Bones Malones, generating the ever-so-precious fuel that will eventually power the nostalgia of the next millennium’s children.
A child of a cursed time, Bones Malones was conceived when two star-crossed hitchhikers named Ingenuity and Spunk met at a fateful crossroads. Born smelling vaguely of whiskey, clove cigarettes and religion, Malones quickly appropriated the cacophony of nature around him, turning it into the sweetest melodies this side of the Stargate.
Blessed with the kind of voice appreciated by martyrs and derelicts alike, Malones’s sound can best be described as the noise a muffled gunshot makes echoing off the hills of eccentricity. Or, as those in the “industry” may refer to it, an inspired mélange of Folk, Country, Blues, Rock, R&B, Pop, Industrial/Percussive, Hip Hop, Latin, and a couple of genres too difficult to pronounce by those lacking a forked-tongue.
Never once meeting an instrument he didn’t get along with, save perhaps an isolated incident involving a murderous kazoo, Malones has taken an especial shining to the guitar, piano, organ, accordion, banjo and harmonica, en route to putting the world’s only one-squid band to deep and mighty shame.
So modest he makes modesty look like a charlatan, Malones is reluctant to the point of forced arm contortion to speak of his accomplishments. Where most would skip gaily about town, bragging to all who may listen about their exploits at the penny arcade, Malones rarely even mentions that he has appeared twice in The Mirror’s Best Of Montreal edition, has two self-produced albums under his cobra skin belt, or that he has contributed original music for a Hollywood Fringe Festival production, put on by renowned actress Helene Udy (of Star Trek : Deep Space Nine and Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman fame).
Released in 2010, his breakout LP Barn Recordings was a product not only of his love of all things agricultural but also of the actual suburban barn that doubles as both his living quarters and his own personal studio.
His forthcoming sophomore offering Calyptrophone, promises to feature accompaniments by members of Cab, The BCASA, Danny Rebel & The KGB, and more than could ever be named in a finite or infinite space.
Spreading the wealth around like the antithesis of an animated Scottish duck, Malones has always been willing to lend a helping hand to his brothers and sisters in arms. Recently engineering and co-producing The BCASA’s Bateman Begins for Stomp Records, Malones also co-engineered The Fabulous Lolo’s 2011 Montreal Jazz Fest CD in addition to teaming with fellow troubadour Ryan McNally.
If it is true that where there is smoke, there is fire, then it is also true that where there is fire, there is Bones Malones, rubbing together magic and euphoria to keep the cosmic blaze going all night long.
