Niechęć - Śmierć w Miękkim Futerku
Об альбоме на англ. яз.
While comparisons to nu-jazz, Krzysztof Komeda, and Tomasz Stańko abound, Śmierć W Miękkim Futerku is not a jazz album per se. It is an album replete with uber catchy, extremely accessible rock motifs, and a good deal of the Polish “uncoolness” of mud-drenched punk music festivals and all-around Chopin adoration.
“After You,” previously released on the unassuming eponymous EP, now seems like one of the most breathtaking compositions of the last couple of years. “Mojry” includes an outburst reminiscent of Komeda’s “Nighttime, Daytime Requiem,” and a post-rock conclusion. “Fecaliano’s” elegance recalls Toro Y Moi’s Underneath The Pine (say, “Divinia”); the song was written by a saxophone player, yet doesn’t contain even one note of the saxophone. The Godspeed! You Black Emperor-esque mass of the titular song counterbalances the Jaga Jazzist-like lightness of “Niespokojny relaks” and “Prozak.” Supersilent and Rune Gramoffon’s ferociousness go hand in hand with ECM’s accessibility. Part pastoral, part breakcore.
The drummer plays with great technical proficiency, leaning towards John Bonham’s vehemence, but is also able to step away and give space to the rest of the band. Expressive saxophonist Michał Zwierzchowski well deserves his “Zwierzak” (“Animal”) nickname, and pianist Tomek Wielechowski has broadened his instrument’s sound gamut to include vividly-colored synthesizers and Pink Floyd-like organs. Guitar soundscapes neighbor with distorted eruptions and semi-acoustic sounds, while the bass player favors dub pulses yet doesn’t completely limit himself to that way of playing. Niechęć’s previous album comes off as a mere draftbook now, one that has turned into a dramatically different end product. The band somehow seems to explore everything there is to their limited stylistic focus. Śmierć W Miękkim Futerku is a punch that’s hard to duck from.
