Grady Freeman and the Seventh Sons have created a significant branch on the contemporary music tree with “Kick Off Your Shoes”. A refreshing blend of blues, R&B, soul, funk, rock and jazz, Grady has bridged traditional to contemporary music creating an entertaining and motivational masterpiece. “I took some of the elements from my days of coming up with dudes like Rice Miller, Junior Wells, Little Walter and Muddy Waters, mixed with common sense common sense and modern ideals.” , Grady Freeman exuberantly explains, “We really created it to make people grin and get down.”
Grady, a blues and R&B veteran who was once a Chess Records recording artist in the early 60’s, joined the Seventh Sons, a young group of skilled musicians and writers to mutually create new, unique and significant music with traditional Chicago blues and R&B as a foundation.
Besides Grady, veterans Lil’ Joe Burton of the Junior Wells Band, Bill McFarland of the Chicago Horns, Sonny Seal of Curtis Mayfield fame, Bobby Brown, and Mick Scott also made major contributions to song arrangements, defining a bold and unique direction. “In the mainstream blues is ‘Sweet Home Chicago’”, Bill Purvis says with an eye roll. “We wanted to make a CD that encompassed the feeling and tradition of the blues to a wide variety of audiences to show that there is a lot more to the blues than ‘Sweet Home Chicago.’”. So sit back, listen and kick off your shoes. -- From the liner notes written by producer Scott” Squat” Levy.A journeyman Chicago harp blower, Grady Freeman programmed this disc with the express purpose of taking “some of the elements from my days coming up with dudes like Rice Miller, Junior Wels, Little Walter, and Muddy Waters, mixed with common sense and modern ideals.” Fortunately, that does not mean synths and drum machines- Freeman is backed throughout by a tight five-piece and, augmented at times by a punchy horn section comprised of veteran session men Bill McFarland, Sonny Seal, and Bobby Brown. On those tracks, Freeman and his mates recall such R&B units as Big Twist and Mellow Fellows, but when he breaks out his harmonica on tunes like Play With Your Body, I’m Just Your Fool, and the up tempo instrumental Sinker, the music takes on a decidedly 50’s flavor. This is a solid effort by a guy who deserves to be more widely known -- JDK Living Blues Magazine, March/April 2000.Grady Freeman has an expressive, gospel inflected singing style that fits the Seventh Sons’ real blues style perfectly. Kick Off Your Shoes presents straight ahead retro stuff that could have been cut in the 60’s and 70’s (and doesn’t sound newer than that), and that’s a beautiful thing. Freeman’s harp playing is as to the point as his writing, and the Sons keep things refreshingly uncluttered and unaffected. If you like the old school, this is for you. -- Blues Review Magazine March 2000.Blues vocalist and harpist Grady Freeman spent the 50’s alongside such future legends as Junior Wells and brothers Dave and Louis Myers, and in the early 60’s he gigged around Chicago with the likes of Little Walter and Otis Rush. In 1963, he signed with Chess Records, and though he recorded a number of R&B and blues songs for the label, none was ever released, and in frustration he dropped out of the music business for almost a quarter century. Then in the late 80’s he formed the Family Band, which at times included respected blues vets like tenor saxist Little Bobby Neely, and started playing shows on the southside. In front of that group, his harp blowing had a rough-edged 50’s style, and he sang with a countryish vibrato reminiscent of Rice Miller. On his 1999 debut CD, Kick Off Your Shoes (GFSS Partnership) however, he tackles sophisticated soul blues alternating between swinging elegance and burbling funk; though his vocal timbre is meaty and confident he emotes subtly, with quavers or gasps, instead of outright hollering. He solos with the dexterity of a horn man, skittering impishly from one graceful glide or swoop to the next, and he textures his richly burnished harp tone with a rippling vibrato. Hard core aficionados of the Chicago style might wish Freeman would cut loose more often-only occasionally, as on his jubilant cover of Little Walter’s “I’m Just Your Fool,” does it sound like he’s working up a sweat. But to my ears, the majestic ease with which he masters even the most challenging material is as thrilling as any show of abandon. Freeman will be accompanied here by his current backing band the Seventh Sons, distinguished by guitarist John Elverum’s rockabilly tinge and the masterfully understated drive of drummer Rob Aguilera.
