Sly & The Family Stone - There's a Riot Going On (1971)
Media:
Original LP 1st pressing, Epic, KE 30986
Scans! sorry I don't have this LP anymore... anyone got a nice set of scans for this?
Equipment:
Vpi HW-17F Record Cleaning Machine
Heybrook TT2 with Origin Live! power supply and DC motor
Rega RB 300 tonearm (Origin Live! mod)
Ortofon MC25FL M/C Cartridge
Denon PMA 8500 (M/C phono section)
ESI Systems Juli@ A/D
Adobe Audition 1.5 / 3.0
Method:
- Record cleaned on Vpi machine.
- Audio sampled at 96/32 float.
- Filter to roll-off frequencies below 20 HZ (only below audible frequencies).
Audio restoration:
- Manual declick and deglitch - my method is to scan through the audio with ears and eyes, looking for anomalies and try to only declick when I know it's the right thing to do.
- Denoising treatments are sometimes used near fades; centreing the bass info; centreing sampled noise patterns, gradually fading in NR if it's bad... as little NR as possible!
- All whole sides normalized to 100% NEVER using compression or limiting.
Synopsis:
Genuine early 1st pressing in mint condition. There was almost nothing to do to get it sounding clean, though I centred the rather loud groove roar near the fades. This is a murky, almost amateurish poduction... rumour has it that Sly alienated all his engineer friends at the time through copious cocaine abuse (which - given this was California in the early 1970's must have taken some doing!) and the story goes that this was all recorded and mostly played by Sly himself. He was a great performer but not such a great engineer. However that means what we have here is a genuine one-off that has its very own personality. Audio-wise it is another example of how it is sometimes good to throw a bad recording to the wolvces of the hi-res world, just so you can get into it even deeper and discover the hidden depths. There are some great sounds in here.
