A collection of rare and hard to find tracks,
‘How Nature Works’ originally surfaced as a
hugely limited CDR back in 2004, so it’s nice
to see it available for wider release now. The
Russian duo have been dormant (or at least very
quiet) for some time now, but their moody blend
of Autechre’s technical wallop and Richard D.
James’s ear for harmony is still just as
involving as it was back in the late 1990s.
This odds-and-ends roundup is a great
cross-section of their work, and while it
doesn’t have the distinct narrative of their
‘proper’ albums, it’s still a hugely enjoyable
listen for fans and newbies alike. I’m getting
nostalgic for the late 90s already, catching a
bus to work, Minidisc player in hand, crack
smoke in the air – aaaah. Lovely.
