Солнечная и любвеобильная Бразилия объединила в себе культурное наследие трёх цивилизаций – индейской, европейской и африканской. Соответственно, в результате смешения различных традиций, и бразильская музыка, подарившая нам Антониу Карлоса Жобима, Каэтану Велозу, Аструд Жилберту, необычайно пестра и самобытна. Самба, пагоде, форро, кариокский фанк, шору, босса-нова, сертанежу, MPB – вот лишь некоторые бразильские жанры. Именно в атмосфере такого колоссального разнообразия появилась звезда нового поколения Сеу, которой удалось привнести в эту радужную музыкальную палитру свой колорит.
Мария ду Сеу Уитакер Покас – таково полное имя соблазнительной исполнительницы, предпочитающей называть себя просто Сеу (что по-португальски значит «небо»). Обладательница замечательного голоса, внешности, музыкального вкуса и нескольких статуэток Грэмми на сегодняшний день является одной из наиболее востребованных бразильских певиц. Сеу родилась в Сан-Паулу 17 апреля 1980 года в семье музыкантов. Её папа был композитором, аранжировщиком и музыковедом. Именно от него Мария ду Сеу заразилась любовью к бразильской классической музыке. В возрасте пятнадцати лет она решила стать музыкантом и посвятила свои ранние годы изучению музыкальных основ. Я чувствую сильную связь с музыкой самба, особенно со старой школой самбы, именуемой у нас Samba de raiz («корни самбы»). Я слушаю много виниловых пластинок и стараюсь привнести их звучание в свои CD-альбомы, смешивая старые жанры с современными, к примеру с такими, как реп или брега (с португальского – «бордель») — свежая волна в Бразилии».
Практически все альбомы Сеу, начиная с дебютного диска, получившего в 2006 году музыкальную премию Грэмми в категории «Лучший альбом современной музыки мира» (Best Contemporary World Music Album), были тепло встречены и критиками, и публикой. Этот наименьший элемент цифрового изображения стал, по признанию исполнительницы, символом-вдохновителем, потому что является «малой частью глобального концепта». Диск преисполнен волнительных электронных мелодий, аранжировки к которым навевают воспоминания то о воздушном, синтезаторном диско восьмидесятых, то о трип-хоповой меланхолии двухтысячных.
Пятый студийный альбом APKÁ!, вышедший в июне 2020 года, стал для Сеу в определённом смысле итоговым, показывающим спектр музыкальных увлечений бразильской певицы в течении её 15-летней карьеры. За название альбома Сеу благодарит младшего сына Антонино, который в годовалом возрасте спонтанно выкрикнул сие междометие, чтобы выразить своё полное удовлетворение. Странное, выдуманное слово, вероятно, должно было показать, что ребёнок доволен всем – от еды до игры. Подобную смесь восторга и благодарности по-своему постаралась отразить и Сеу в своей музыке.
12 ноября 2021 года на лейбле Urban Jungle (который принадлежит бразильскому подразделению Warner Music) увидел свет первый в дискографии Сеу альбом каверов Um Gosto de Sol. Заглавная композиция лонг-плея «Вкус солнечного света» – хит Милтона Насименту, классика бразильской эстрады и лауреата премии «Грэмми» (1998, в категории Best world music album). Из легендарных бразильских шлягеров на новом диске Сеу можно услышать незабвенную Feelings Морриса Альберта, песню самба-дивы Альcионе Диас Назарет (более известной как Альсионе), а также кавер-версию Chega mais («Подойди ближе»), написанную в 1979 году певицей Ритой Ли в сотрудничестве с её супругом Роберто де Карвальо. Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças, known professionally as Céu (Portuguese pronunciation: [sɛw]; born 17 April 1980), is a Brazilian singer-songwriter whose first American album was released on the Six Degrees Records label in April 2007.
Céu was born in São Paulo, Brazil, to a musical family. Her father was a composer, arranger, and musicologist. It was from her father that she learned to appreciate Brazil's classical music composers, particularly Heitor Villa-Lobos, Ernesto Nazaré, and Orlando Silva.
At fifteen, she decided to become a musician and by her late teens, she studied music theory, as well as the violão (a nylon-stringed Brazilian guitar). Her songs reveal many influences, which include samba, salsa, choro, soul, rhythm and blues, hip hop, afrobeat, and electrojazz music. She cites as influences the music of African-Americans Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Jorge Ben.
Céu was performing onstage and exploring the repertoire of turn-of-the-century carnival music by her late teens. Soon after that, she relocated temporarily to New York City, where she had a chance to meet with fellow Brazilian musician Antônio Pinto. Later she learned that he was actually a distant cousin. Their relationship renewed when he teamed up with lead producer Beto Villares, composer of the musical score for the movie O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias (2007), to help her record her album. Antonio Pinto, who produced Céu's song "Ave Cruz", is the composer of the musical score for two Oscar-nominated films, Central Station (1999) and City of God (2002).
Originally issued in 2005 on the São Paulo-based Urban Jungle, her self-titled debut album Céu was picked up by Six Degrees/Starbucks/Hear Music in the US and UK, JVC in Japan and Harmonia Mundi in France and in the Netherlands. For this album, Céu received a Latin Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist" in 2006 and a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2008.
Céu performed at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Pan American Games.
In 2008, Céu formed the São Paulo collective Sonantes with Brazilian musicians and producers Rica Amabis, Gui Amabis, Pupillo, and Dengue. The song "Malemolência" was featured in the soccer game by EA Sports, FIFA 08.
In 2009, her critically acclaimed second album Vagarosa reached No. 2 on the US Billboard's World Music charts. The album was nominated for a 2010 Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album.
In 2010, Céu was invited by Herbie Hancock to record a version of "Tempo de Amor" for The Imagine Project album. Céu also performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2010.
In 2011, she contributed a version of the track "It's a Long Way" in collaboration with Apollo Nove and N.A.S.A. for the Red Hot Organization's most recent charitable album Red Hot + Rio 2. The album is a follow-up to the 1996 Red Hot + Rio. In 2012, Céu received her third Latin Grammy nomination for "Best Contemporary Brazilian Pop Album" for her third album Caravana Sereia Bloom.
Between 2013 and 2014 Céu performed a series of concerts in Brazil to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the release of Bob Marley and the Wailers' legendary album Catch a Fire.
In 2014, she released her first live DVD/CD entitled Céu – Ao Vivo in Brazil. The concert was filmed in August 2014 in São Paulo and contains 15 tracks in total, including the never before released cover versions of all-time classics "Piel Canela" and "Mais Uma Noite de Amor", behind-the-scenes footage of the band, and more. Céu – Ao Vivo also includes live versions of Céu's greatest hits, "Lenda", "Malemolência", "10 Contados", "Cangote" and "Baile de Ilusão".
In 2016, she released her fourth studio album named Tropix. She received critical acclaim from such publications as The Guardian and The New York Times. She also won, in the same year, her first Latin Grammy in the Best Portuguese Language Contemporary Pop Album category.
Her album APKÁ was considered one of the 25 best Brazilian albums of the second half of 2019 by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics.
Starbucks has promoted her album in its coffeehouses through its Hear Music Debut CD series. She was the first international artist chosen by Starbucks for promotion.
Céu (céu) means "sky" and "heaven" in Portuguese.
She is the second cousin of Maria Casadevall (a popular Brazilian actress with more than 13 years of career). She is the eldest of the two cousins (Céu is 7 years older than Casadevall).

Céu Returns Home to Record Her First Live Album
To celebrate her tenth year in music, Brazil’s Céu performed in her home neighborhood in São Paulo to enthusiastic praise. The resulting 15-song, Live (Six Degrees Records) is a brilliant journey through her first three albums, all of which have helped make her an international star.
“The fans here in Brazil were always asking for a live show,” says Céu of the performance, which took place at the Centro Cultural Rio Verde in the center of the Vila Madalena neighborhood. “I wanted a place that captures the proximity and has the aesthetics of Caravana Sereia Bloom. Cozy, you know? I wanted the audience to feel as if they were watching in their home, feeling as if they were a part of the performance.”
With four Grammy nominations, numerous appearances on the Billboard charts (including reaching #1 on the World Music charts) and performing at Coachella all behind her, Live arrives at a perfect juncture in Céu’s career: as she readies her fourth studio album, while looking back and recognizing how beloved a live performer she’s become over her decade-long career.
Céu’s third album Caravana Sereia Bloom (which was dedicated to the open sky on long road trips) provides the live album with the opening ‘Falta Da Ar.’ She switches between English and Portuguese during the slow, melodic intro before the drums and bass kick into tempo—and the singer is off and running.
She stays in her sweet spot, between high energy and subdued & seductive—the sound that made her a star when Six Degrees released her debut worldwide in partnership with Starbuck’s Hear Music label—for the entire hour-plus of music. New guitar and keyboard textures are added to one of her few English-language songs, ‘Streets Bloom,’ without losing a bit of the sing-along, dubby vibe of the original.
While for this performance Céu replicated the blueprint of her Caravana tour, she used this opportunity to reinvigorate older material as well. ‘Malemolência,’ from her self-titled debut, is a mid-tempo gem of a song proving that Céu is a singer of syllables: she effortlessly glides across language to create harmonies, this being perhaps one of her most popular examples.
Also from her debut comes ‘Lenda’ and Live’s closer, ‘Rainha.’ Then there’s her cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Concrete Jungle.’ The original recording is minimal, acoustic; here guitarist Dustan Gallas gets to stretch out, while Lucas Martins effortlessly floats across Family Man Barrett’s unforgettable bass line. Reggae has long had its influence on Céu both personally and musically and her take on this Marley classic has long been a crowd favorite.
Live is as much about the band as it is about Céu herself. Determined to not merely replicate her records, the musician’s input makes this record a complete group effort. “I like to see the musicians from the band having ideas and exchanging material,” she says. “It means that they are involved with the work.”
The band—rounded out by drummer Bruno Buarque and DJ Marco—comes alive during a cover of Pepeu Gomes’s hit, ‘Mil e Uma Noites de Amor,’ which Céu has never recorded before. “It is a song that I simply love,” she says, “It’s part of my life. The way Pepeu plays the guitar is brilliant and so Brazilian. We started to perform it for a festival in Recife and never stopped.”
Céu’s second album, Vagarosa, is featured here with ‘Grains de Beauté,’ the crowd jumping right in to offer background vocal support. The audience is as much a part of this recording as anyone on stage. According to the singer, this is crucial for her success.
“The chemistry that happens between band members is a kind of alchemy that you can feel,” she says, ‘but to really make it happen I need to feel connected to the audience.”
That isn’t too hard a challenge in a city as musical as São Paulo, where she has lived her entire life. “Everybody comes to São Paulo—it’s the city that has more places to perform live and more opportunities than any other in Brazil.”
Now that her first three albums have been captured live, Céu is excited to return to the studio. While she’s not certain which musical direction she’ll be heading in, one thing is for sure: “What I know for now is that I am going back to the beats. Not just acoustic drums.”
