Может быть кто-нибудь захочет перевести венгерскую комедию 'A Kenguru' (1975)?
'If you want to see how things were going on in Hungary in mid-70's, this is a must.
A young truck driver transports things for the mid-70' building of the Paks atom reactor center. Picking up a young hitchhiker girl and losing her from his sight in an hour builds up a dream in him of love adventure, pressing him in the danger of losing her girlfriend. The film is about his hesitation and way to decision'.
'It's 28. August 1962, and the day is starting much like any other in Communist Hungary. Uncle Simon wakes up the tenement block with some stirring music and makes the day's announcements. To Attila, there is one that really is worth listening to this time. There is to be a talent competition and, more than that, the first prize will be a trip to a youth convention on the other side of the Iron Curtain - in Helsinki. This has particular interest for Attila, since his beloved, Katinka, lives in Toronto. The distance between them is straining his heart, not to mention the fact that she hasn't written for a good number of years. Winning the competition would be an ideal way of escaping to Canada so they may be reunited.
Everything for Attila seems to be on the up. He forms a band to realise his talent contest dreams, and Katinka even starts writing to him again (although she doesn't give him an address to reply to). However, he is not the only one who has pinned his hopes on winning. Everyone on the block seems just as determined to win the competition and go on the coveted trip to the West. How could things remain simple in such a scenario?
Review:
Lovely musical parody of the communist Kádár era in Hungary. The film is full of references to the period, to its patterns of thinking, to its propaganda. (Like the rumors - spread by the communist propaganda of the 50s and early 60s - that Chesterfield cigarettes contain cocaine and coke is a psychoactive drug.) The songs are also from this period - this gives "Csinibaba" (Pretty Baby, also a song title) a nostalgic touch, but tinted with irony at the same time: now we can laugh about this era - at last! This probably explains the huge success of this film in Hungary. (The backdrop of the plot - the Ki mit tud? (Who knows/is able to do what?) talent search show - of 1962 really did take place.) I don't think this film misunderstands the era, it just doesn't take it too seriously. Instead, it uses the means of humor and irony to free us from the past'.
