This Mozart CD is the first time I have encountered the singing of soprano Karina Gauvin, but she is apparently nearly an icon in her native Canada, particularly in the French-speaking province of Quebec, from whence she hails. Long a Baroque and early music specialist with several well regarded recordings in her past, Gauvin has lately been delving into Mozart, as she does here with the chamber group Les Violons du Roy, to produce a quite entertaining recital.
Gauvin possesses a lovely lyric voice, secure vocal technique, rock-solid pitch control, and the vocal agility to easily handle Mozart’s more florid passages. Of the eight vocal numbers performed here, none is a rarity, although the first, “Aer tranquillo” from Il Re Pastore , was written for a male character sung by a castrato. It is a charming aria, one of Mozart’s best, more often these days adopted by mezzos or sopranos. Two of the works are so-called concert arias, K 369 and K 505, two of Mozart’s more famous, but both are operatic in style and texture. Of the five other opera arias, Gauvin gives us Pamina ( Die Zauberflöte ) in “Ach, Ich fühl’s,” Susanna ( Le Nozze di Figaro ) in “Deh vieni,” Vitellia ( La Clemenza di Tito ) in “Non piu di fiori,” and Fiordiligi ( Così fan tutte ) in “Come scoglio.” Oddly, Gauvin concludes the program with the soubrette role of Despina ( Così fan tutte ) singing the perky “In uomini! In soldati,” a role she would probably never take on stage. To my ear Gauvin seems to put more bite into some emotions than others, as with the badly conflicted Fiordiligi, although she sings everything well. I don’t know how much of this music she has actually sung on stage, but an opera director might be forgiven for asking Gauvin to provide a bit more vocal drama at times. One other small quibble,: The soprano’s voice seems to lose volume and disappear a bit when she follows Mozart down to the lower reaches of her range.
Another pleasant first for me here is the playing of Les Violons du Roy, a chamber group of some 15 permanent members, here augmented by added strings and wind players to make up a proper Mozartean pit band. They are led excellently by noted conductor Bernard Labadie. The group apparently plays on modern instruments (but the strings with Baroque-era bows) using historically informed technique. Here they offer two instrumental works, an early Mozart overture to Lucio Silla , K 135, and the overture to his last opera, La Clemenza di Tito , K 621. The playing is remarkably clean and impeccable; all of Mozart’s inner nuances can be heard clearly. Les Violons also accompanies Gauvin with commendable sensitivity. The stellar basset horn playing of André Moisan in “Non piu di fiori” especially deserves mention. All in all, a fine disc and highly recommended.
