Список смертников / Игра в смерть / Грязный Гарри 5: Список смертников/ Смертельный список / The Dead Pool

[Full Screen]

«Dirty Harry Just Learned A New Game»
Buddy Van Horn

Get off my ass.
22
00:06:25,359 --> 00:06:26,508
He's going.
23
00:06:29,239 --> 00:06:31,514
Did you recognize
any of the attackers?
24
00:06:31,719 --> 00:06:35,268
Is this attack connected to
the Janero trial?
25
00:06:35,479 --> 00:06:38,437
Has Janero put out a contract
on your life?
26
00:06:38,639 --> 00:06:42,154
- Were these Janero's men?
- Have you received death threats?
27
00:06:42,919 --> 00:06:45,353
Is the department protecting you?
28
00:06:45,559 --> 00:06:48,392
The department will issue
a statement...
29
00:06:48,599 --> 00:06:51,796
...as soon as we've conducted
an investigation.
30
00:06:52,319 --> 00:06:55,595
$13,453.63.
31
00:06:55,799 --> 00:06:58,438
That's the price of
an unmarked squad.
32
00:06:58,639 --> 00:07:01,073
It's the third car
you trashed this month.
33
00:07:01,279 --> 00:07:03,076
- Lou Janero.
- What?
34
00:07:03,279 --> 00:07:05,554
His men shot the car.
Send him the bill.
35
00:07:05,759 --> 00:07:10,514
See how funny it is behind a desk,
because you're off the street.
36
00:07:10,719 --> 00:07:14,234
- All this for a car?
- Lieutenant Ackerman's request.
37
00:07:14,439 --> 00:07:16,555
It's for your own good.
38
00:07:16,759 --> 00:07:20,388
- If you think I'm gonna...
- Just until we handle Janero.
39
00:07:20,599 --> 00:07:24,512
He's in prison, but clearly
calling the shots. Literally.
40
00:07:24,719 --> 00:07:29,190
Our hero can't be turned to
Swiss cheese before the commendation.
41
00:07:29,399 --> 00:07:32,197
See? You're getting a commendation.
42
00:07:33,359 --> 00:07:34,792
Swell.
43
00:07:36,999 --> 00:07:39,797
We must take advantage
of the press you're getting.
44
00:07:40,039 --> 00:07:41,791
How do you propose to do that?
45
00:07:42,039 --> 00:07:46,476
It's my opinion that you should
work with me in public relations.
46
00:07:46,679 --> 00:07:50,558
Opinions are like assholes.
Everybody has one.
47
00:07:51,999 --> 00:07:55,230
You don't know what you've done
for our image.
48
00:07:55,439 --> 00:07:57,873
You just put a major
crime figure in prison.
49
00:07:58,079 --> 00:08:02,391
You've got a high visibility right
now, and for once, it's positive.
50
00:08:02,639 --> 00:08:05,233
You know what that means
for recruitment?
51
00:08:05,439 --> 00:08:08,078
Look at this copy we're getting.
52
00:08:08,279 --> 00:08:11,351
We've never been
this swamped for interviews.
53
00:08:11,559 --> 00:08:14,073
I'm not some dog-and-pony act.
54
00:08:15,119 --> 00:08:18,794
We must maximize your public
relations value while we can.
55
00:08:18,999 --> 00:08:22,628
Getting close and personal
with reporters isn't my job.
56
00:08:22,839 --> 00:08:25,273
Your job is promoting our
positive image.
57
00:08:25,479 --> 00:08:29,472
How positive would it be if I
resigned, lieutenant?
58
00:08:33,079 --> 00:08:34,797
Don't misunderstand me.
59
00:08:34,999 --> 00:08:38,753
Harry, all I'm asking for
is a little cooperation.
60
00:08:39,759 --> 00:08:43,274
We don't have to pull you
off the street completely.
61
00:08:43,479 --> 00:08:46,949
- Just be cooperative with the press.
- Anything else?
62
00:08:47,159 --> 00:08:48,512
Yeah.
63
00:08:49,679 --> 00:08:52,147
Quan, will you come in here?
64
00:08:52,959 --> 00:08:56,872
Quan's moving from the Youth Gang
Task Force to Homicide.
65
00:08:57,079 --> 00:09:00,310
Good, Homicide can use a cop
with Al's experience.
66
00:09:00,559 --> 00:09:01,708
I'm glad you agree.
67
00:09:01,919 --> 00:09:05,594
If you remain on the street,
Quan will watch your back.
68
00:09:05,799 --> 00:09:07,437
- Now hold on...
- That's final.
69
00:09:07,639 --> 00:09:12,030
That's swell, being that most
of my partners end up hurt or dead.
70
00:09:12,239 --> 00:09:14,230
Ask Al how he feels about it.
71
00:09:14,439 --> 00:09:17,909
Well, Quan? Any objections
to working with Callahan?
72
00:09:18,119 --> 00:09:20,155
I think I can handle it.
73
00:09:20,919 --> 00:09:23,069
Get a bulletproof vest, kid.
74
00:09:23,279 --> 00:09:27,909
Teaming Harry with a Chinese-American
is good for our image.
75
00:09:33,919 --> 00:09:36,831
- You have any kids?
- Me? No.
76
00:09:37,159 --> 00:09:38,751
Lucky for them.
77
00:11:02,439 --> 00:11:03,667
Cut. Cut!
78
00:11:04,919 --> 00:11:08,229
You're out of sync, Johnny.
What's the problem?
79
00:11:10,439 --> 00:11:11,792
Where is that fool?
80
00:11:12,039 --> 00:11:13,154
Jeff!
81
00:11:13,479 --> 00:11:14,389
Jeff!
82
00:11:14,599 --> 00:11:16,112
We've had a short, Peter.
83
00:11:16,319 --> 00:11:20,756
"Trust me," you said. Right?
Did he say that?
84
00:11:20,959 --> 00:11:23,427
That means "fuck you"
in this business.
85
00:11:23,639 --> 00:11:27,791
I checked it. I've got a backup head.
Give me 20 minutes.
86
00:11:28,119 --> 00:11:30,758
All right, do it.
And no cock-ups.
87
00:11:30,959 --> 00:11:34,156
And that goes for the rest
of you morons.
88
00:11:35,759 --> 00:11:37,477
This sucks, man.
89
00:11:38,199 --> 00:11:40,952
How can I sing
with shit exploding all over?
90
00:11:41,159 --> 00:11:44,868
- It was an accident.
- This whole movie's an accident.
91
00:11:45,079 --> 00:11:47,593
How did I get talked into this shit?
92
00:11:47,799 --> 00:11:50,996
You need a video.
I need this scene for the film.
93
00:11:51,199 --> 00:11:53,474
We're getting what we want.
94
00:11:53,679 --> 00:11:58,355
Why aren't we shooting on a warm
sound stage, instead of a meat locker?
95
00:11:58,559 --> 00:12:02,598
It's cold so the audience
can see your breath when you sing.
96
00:12:02,799 --> 00:12:03,788
Brilliant.
97
00:12:03,999 --> 00:12:07,958
Not original, but people
will know I froze my ass off.
98
00:12:08,159 --> 00:12:09,512
What's that mean?
99
00:12:09,719 --> 00:12:14,349
A director with talent would
shoot something original.
100
00:12:14,559 --> 00:12:17,357
Instead of ripping off
<i>The Exorcist.</i>
101
00:12:17,559 --> 00:12:21,871
This is not a rip-off,
it's a homage. You stupid...
102
00:12:26,239 --> 00:12:28,036
Jesus, I don't believe you.
103
00:12:28,759 --> 00:12:29,589
What?
104
00:12:29,879 --> 00:12:31,949
You're hurting, aren't you?
105
00:12:32,319 --> 00:12:33,672
What do you mean?
106
00:12:33,879 --> 00:12:36,598
You promised not during shooting.
107
00:12:36,839 --> 00:12:40,627
I know what I'm doing.
I can handle it.
108
00:12:40,839 --> 00:12:43,797
- You won't fuck up my film!
- I'll handle it!
109
00:12:46,959 --> 00:12:51,316
Just let me go back to the trailer
and get it together.
110
00:12:52,279 --> 00:12:54,110
Then we'll kick some ass.
111
00:12:54,319 --> 00:12:55,798
- Okay?
- Okay.
112
00:12:56,159 --> 00:12:59,435
- Can I get a coat?
- Get a coat, please, for Johnny.
113
00:13:01,159 --> 00:13:04,595
- Now what?
- Don't worry, he's a trained seal.
114
00:13:04,799 --> 00:13:07,359
Throw him a fish, he'll perform.
115
00:13:29,559 --> 00:13:31,595
Rise and shine, boys.
116
00:13:32,839 --> 00:13:34,591
Time to get up.
117
00:14:14,039 --> 00:14:15,631
What's happening?
118
00:15:04,639 --> 00:15:07,949
I always knew working Homicide
would be glamorous.
119
00:15:08,159 --> 00:15:10,627
I mean, meeting celebrities and all.
120
00:15:11,519 --> 00:15:13,987
Too bad you can't get his autograph.
121
00:15:14,719 --> 00:15:17,677
You know, Harry,
they always die in threes.
122
00:15:18,239 --> 00:15:22,915
When a celebrity dies, two more
go in a week or two.
123
00:15:23,119 --> 00:15:26,395
It's a fact, Harry.
Celebrities die in threes.
124
00:15:26,599 --> 00:15:30,194
This one has crystalline
around his nose and mouth.
125
00:15:30,399 --> 00:15:32,310
Scabs up and down both arms.
126
00:15:32,519 --> 00:15:35,716
Fresh puncture marks
on his left forearm.
127
00:15:36,999 --> 00:15:40,992
Yeah, Homicide can be
really glamorous.
128
00:16:03,319 --> 00:16:05,514
Check the dummy out, please.
129
00:16:06,119 --> 00:16:07,472
Meagan.
130
00:16:10,799 --> 00:16:13,313
I want a three-inch lens, very tight.
131
00:16:14,399 --> 00:16:15,718
Try not to drop it.
132
00:16:15,919 --> 00:16:19,514
Let's hurry up and shoot this
and wrap this up.
133
00:16:28,999 --> 00:16:32,548
My second assistant and I
found Johnny in his trailer.
134
00:16:32,999 --> 00:16:37,117
He was just lying there.
At first we thought it was a joke.
135
00:16:37,439 --> 00:16:40,158
- But then...
- When did you last see him alive?
136
00:16:40,359 --> 00:16:45,035
A half-hour before that. He went
to his trailer while we set up.
137
00:16:45,239 --> 00:16:46,274
Was he alone?
138
00:16:46,479 --> 00:16:49,471
I don't know.
He was alone when we found him.
139
00:16:49,999 --> 00:16:52,593
Tell me, does anyone
on your set use drugs?
140
00:16:52,799 --> 00:16:56,155
We don't do drugs, Callahan.
We do film.
141
00:16:57,439 --> 00:16:59,953
What people do is their own business.
142
00:17:00,159 --> 00:17:04,357
If it doesn't interfere with my film,
I don't give a shit.
143
00:17:08,759 --> 00:17:12,354
- Was Squares using?
- How should I know?
144
00:17:12,839 --> 00:17:14,750
He had agents, lawyers, friends.
145
00:17:14,999 --> 00:17:18,435
It's their job to deal with his
drug problem, not me.
146
00:17:18,639 --> 00:17:20,914
Well, that's a very caring attitude.
147
00:17:21,199 --> 00:17:24,714
What do you want, Callahan?
Drugs were his trademark.
148
00:17:24,919 --> 00:17:28,912
His career was singing about them.
It made him controversial.
149
00:17:29,359 --> 00:17:32,032
I can see why you'd want him
in your flick.
150
00:17:32,239 --> 00:17:35,788
It was a marketing decision.
Johnny sells tickets.
151
00:17:35,999 --> 00:17:39,992
You know, bums on seats, love.
And we needed a video tie-in.
152
00:17:40,199 --> 00:17:42,554
Any idea who was supplying him?
153
00:17:43,599 --> 00:17:47,387
No, but if I hear of anything,
I'll call you first.
154
00:17:47,599 --> 00:17:49,476
Marvelous.
155
00:17:55,119 --> 00:17:57,872
Check on anyone
who dealt with Squares.
156
00:17:58,079 --> 00:18:01,355
- Whether the cast, crew...
- Inspector Callahan.
157
00:18:01,879 --> 00:18:03,392
Inspector.
158
00:18:03,599 --> 00:18:04,998
Shit.
159
00:18:05,319 --> 00:18:07,753
Is it true that Johnny Squares OD'd?
160
00:18:07,959 --> 00:18:10,348
We're conducting an investigation.
161
00:18:10,599 --> 00:18:13,557
Right as we speak.
Nothing's been...
162
00:18:13,759 --> 00:18:15,829
Thank you, inspector.
163
00:18:19,319 --> 00:18:22,834
- Excuse me, are you Suzanne Dayton?
- What's going on?
164
00:18:23,079 --> 00:18:24,353
Johnny?
165
00:18:24,679 --> 00:18:26,032
Johnny?
166
00:18:26,439 --> 00:18:28,509
Hold it. I'm sorry, step back.
167
00:18:28,719 --> 00:18:31,552
- No, Johnny!
- There's nothing they can do.
168
00:18:34,839 --> 00:18:36,670
You'll make yourself sick.
169
00:18:36,919 --> 00:18:39,672
Hold on, could we
give her a little air?
170
00:18:40,599 --> 00:18:42,555
Out of the way, please.
171
00:18:48,039 --> 00:18:51,918
- Off with that camera.
- I'll film what I want. Keep shooting.
172
00:18:52,159 --> 00:18:53,911
This is someone's heartache.
173
00:18:54,119 --> 00:18:55,472
Right in here.
174
00:18:55,679 --> 00:18:58,147
What are you doing? Give me that.
175
00:19:07,359 --> 00:19:08,792
Smart.
176
00:20:10,799 --> 00:20:14,508
High and Dry <i>is the kind of</i>
<i>mindless film comedy...</i>
177
00:20:14,719 --> 00:20:18,871
<i>... that's come to typify summer films</i>
<i>aimed at the youth market.</i>
178
00:20:19,079 --> 00:20:22,310
<i>The humor is of the</i>
<i>locker-room variety.</i>
179
00:20:22,519 --> 00:20:26,512
<i>Audiences seeking more sophistication</i>
<i>need to look elsewhere.</i>
180
00:20:26,719 --> 00:20:27,754
<i>The producers...</i>
181
00:20:28,119 --> 00:20:31,429
<i>Rock star Johnny Squares</i>
<i>died this afternoon.</i>
182
00:20:31,639 --> 00:20:34,153
<i>Samantha Walker filed this report.</i>
183
00:20:35,239 --> 00:20:39,437
<i>Johnny Squares was found</i>
<i>dead at the Royal Meat Company...</i>
184
00:20:39,639 --> 00:20:42,472
<i>... on location</i>
<i>of the film</i> Hotel Satan.
185
00:20:42,679 --> 00:20:47,548
<i>The cause of death isn't known,</i>
<i>but Squares had a history of drug use.</i>
186
00:20:47,759 --> 00:20:51,195
<i>He was arrested last July</i>
<i>for possession of heroin.</i>
187
00:20:51,399 --> 00:20:55,028
<i>His songs were allegedly</i>
<i>based on his drug experience.</i>
188
00:21:17,159 --> 00:21:20,708
- What's that all about?
- My past catching up with me.
189
00:21:20,959 --> 00:21:24,952
As a kid, I was in the gang
that hit him up for money.
190
00:21:25,359 --> 00:21:29,034
All my life, I've been involved
with gangs in one way.
191
00:21:29,239 --> 00:21:33,391
I figured I'd come over to Homicide
for something different.
192
00:21:33,599 --> 00:21:35,476
It's different, all right.
193
00:21:39,399 --> 00:21:40,593
Call for backup.
194
00:21:47,759 --> 00:21:50,353
Get the fuck out of here.
Hurry up!
195
00:22:02,919 --> 00:22:03,954
Move it!
196
00:22:04,159 --> 00:22:06,434
Put your money on the table!
Hurry up!
197
00:22:06,639 --> 00:22:07,754
Don't move!
198
00:22:07,999 --> 00:22:09,796
Don't fuck with me, lady!
199
00:22:10,199 --> 00:22:11,712
Come on, guys, hurry up!
200
00:22:11,959 --> 00:22:14,757
- You forgot your fortune cookie.
- What!?
201
00:22:22,159 --> 00:22:23,751
It says:
202
00:22:24,519 --> 00:22:25,918
"You're shit out of luck."
203
00:22:47,719 --> 00:22:49,550
Get out of the way!
204
00:23:17,399 --> 00:23:22,553
"Teaming up with a Chinese-American is
good for the department's image."
205
00:23:38,639 --> 00:23:39,628
Who was he?
206
00:23:39,879 --> 00:23:44,907
Some guy in the wrong place at the
wrong time. Dean Madison was his name.
207
00:23:45,119 --> 00:23:46,757
Does it ring a bell?
208
00:23:47,239 --> 00:23:50,276
- Never heard of him.
- Well, he knew you, Harry.
209
00:23:50,479 --> 00:23:53,551
I found this in his pocket.
It's a list of celebrities.
210
00:23:54,159 --> 00:23:57,993
Tony Engelhart, linebacker.
Michael Cipriano, race car driver.
211
00:23:58,199 --> 00:24:01,794
And one Inspector Harry Callahan.
212
00:24:02,919 --> 00:24:06,753
Johnny Squares is on that list.
See what's by his name?
213
00:24:07,719 --> 00:24:11,189
Yeah, R.I.P. "Rest in peace."
214
00:24:13,679 --> 00:24:17,354
You know what this is? It's a bill
for a TV camera and lens.
215
00:24:17,559 --> 00:24:21,472
I said stop wrecking cars,
not destroy something else.
216
00:24:21,679 --> 00:24:24,113
They interfered
with an investigation.
217
00:24:24,319 --> 00:24:27,914
Don't give us that. Is this
your media cooperation?
218
00:24:28,119 --> 00:24:30,189
Cooperation works two ways.
219
00:24:30,399 --> 00:24:32,788
What is it you have against reporters?
220
00:24:32,999 --> 00:24:35,308
Some of them
are just marvelous people.
221
00:24:35,519 --> 00:24:39,353
Some walk through a pile and track
it through an investigation.
222
00:24:39,559 --> 00:24:41,629
You better change your attitude.
223
00:24:41,879 --> 00:24:44,632
Unless we reach an agreement
with them...
224
00:24:44,879 --> 00:24:48,315
...it'll cost this city
2 million, and your career.
225
00:24:50,359 --> 00:24:51,633
Join us, please.
226
00:24:51,879 --> 00:24:55,428
Ms. Samantha Walker of station KWSF.
Captain Donnelly.
227
00:24:55,639 --> 00:24:58,756
- Ms. Walker.
- Captain.
228
00:24:58,999 --> 00:25:01,672
- And this is Inspector...
- Callahan. We've met.
229
00:25:01,879 --> 00:25:05,030
Yes, of course. Won't you sit down?
230
00:25:06,959 --> 00:25:07,948
Ms. Walker...
231
00:25:08,159 --> 00:25:12,072
...Lieutenant Ackerman tells me
you have a proposal to make...
232
00:25:12,279 --> 00:25:14,634
...regarding the accidental
damage to...
233
00:25:14,879 --> 00:25:18,155
There was nothing accidental about it.
234
00:25:19,279 --> 00:25:22,032
The department has something
to say about it.
235
00:25:22,239 --> 00:25:27,438
Although the camera was destroyed,
I have the entire incident on video.
236
00:25:29,039 --> 00:25:30,313
I see.
237
00:25:33,439 --> 00:25:35,350
And your proposal?
238
00:25:35,759 --> 00:25:39,229
We'll be willing to drop
the lawsuit against the city...
239
00:25:39,439 --> 00:25:42,556
...but that depends
on Inspector Callahan.
240
00:25:43,719 --> 00:25:47,951
- The inspector would be willing to...
- What do you have in mind?
241
00:25:50,399 --> 00:25:51,957
Dinner.
242
00:26:07,399 --> 00:26:09,674
I owe you an apology.
243
00:26:09,999 --> 00:26:12,274
You were right the other day.
244
00:26:12,479 --> 00:26:15,869
I had no business intruding
on that girl's grief.
245
00:26:16,719 --> 00:26:19,153
I get too eager sometimes.
246
00:26:19,359 --> 00:26:22,317
In my rush to get the story,
I made an error.
247
00:26:22,559 --> 00:26:26,871
- We all make those sometimes.
- No, I should have known better.
248
00:26:27,079 --> 00:26:28,592
I'm sorry.
249
00:26:29,599 --> 00:26:32,067
- Let me ask you, Miss Walker...
- Sam.
250
00:26:32,319 --> 00:26:34,549
Sam. Do you like cops?
251
00:26:35,599 --> 00:26:38,750
As long as their not
in my rear-view mirror. Why?
252
00:26:39,599 --> 00:26:44,229
What are we talking about,
other than the damaged camera.
253
00:26:44,479 --> 00:26:46,197
Oh, no, no, no.
254
00:26:46,399 --> 00:26:49,550
I'm letting the insurance company
deal with that.
255
00:26:50,639 --> 00:26:54,268
And I think I can be persuaded
to drop the lawsuit...
256
00:26:54,479 --> 00:26:58,154
...but I want something in return.
- Oh?
257
00:26:58,679 --> 00:27:01,273
- What would that be?
- I want your story.
258
00:27:05,599 --> 00:27:08,955
- What's that?
- I've done my homework on you.
259
00:27:09,159 --> 00:27:11,434
You've had quite a colorful career.
260
00:27:11,639 --> 00:27:13,277
Look at this. You see...
261
00:27:13,479 --> 00:27:16,391
...there's a lot of interest
in the Janero case...
262
00:27:16,639 --> 00:27:19,472
...and the cop who put him in prison.
263
00:27:19,679 --> 00:27:23,911
Channel 8 is doing a special
on organized crime in the Bay Area.
264
00:27:24,119 --> 00:27:28,078
But what I'd like to do
is an in-depth profile...
265
00:27:28,279 --> 00:27:32,750
...of you, Inspector Harry Callahan.
- Sorry, I'm not interested.
266
00:27:32,959 --> 00:27:36,918
Why not? This latest attempt
on your life by one of Janero's men...
267
00:27:37,119 --> 00:27:39,917
You're not interested
in doing a story on me.
268
00:27:40,119 --> 00:27:41,996
You want blood. That's what sells...
269
00:27:42,199 --> 00:27:44,918
- Now wait a minute...
- No, you wait a minute.
270
00:27:45,119 --> 00:27:47,553
You people are interested
in death and mayhem...
271
00:27:47,759 --> 00:27:49,909
...and you don't care
how you get the story.
272
00:27:50,119 --> 00:27:54,237
That is not fair. That's not
the kind of journalism I do.
273
00:27:54,439 --> 00:27:57,158
To you I'm just a cop
with a price on his head.
274
00:27:57,399 --> 00:28:00,994
I don't like people saying
they'll kill me.
275
00:28:01,199 --> 00:28:04,555
Or journalists using it
as a way to increase ratings.
276
00:28:04,759 --> 00:28:08,513
- What I was asking...
- That's the end of the story.
277
00:28:24,079 --> 00:28:25,148
Sorry.
278
00:28:27,759 --> 00:28:32,435
The coroner's report last night
said that Squares used speedballs.
279
00:28:32,639 --> 00:28:35,949
- Cocaine and heroin?
- That's not what killed him.
280
00:28:36,159 --> 00:28:39,151
He used an inhaler
with a new designer drug.
281
00:28:39,359 --> 00:28:41,350
A synthetic form of heroin.
282
00:28:41,559 --> 00:28:44,232
You mean something along the lines
of China White.
283
00:28:44,439 --> 00:28:47,078
Only a thousand times more powerful.
284
00:28:47,279 --> 00:28:50,351
He went into
immediate respiratory failure.
285
00:28:50,559 --> 00:28:53,995
What I'm trying to figure
is why's a guy like that...
286
00:28:54,199 --> 00:28:57,828
...using synthetic junk
when he's got the real stuff?
287
00:28:58,039 --> 00:29:00,155
Maybe he didn't know
what he was using.
288
00:29:05,279 --> 00:29:06,394
Harry.
289
00:29:11,159 --> 00:29:11,955
Harry?
290
00:29:14,439 --> 00:29:16,077
Sorry about that.
291
00:29:19,199 --> 00:29:20,757
Get you next time.
292
00:29:27,079 --> 00:29:30,037
Check the cast and crew
for prior drug busts.
293
00:29:30,239 --> 00:29:34,790
I'll see if Narcotics has
dealers moving synthetic heroin.
294
00:29:35,119 --> 00:29:37,792
Harry, there's something
you should see.
295
00:29:37,999 --> 00:29:40,797
<i>A story to be published</i>
<i>in today's</i> Tribune...
296
00:29:41,039 --> 00:29:44,998
<i>... reveals that director Peter Swan</i>
<i>and people involved...</i>
297
00:29:45,199 --> 00:29:49,829
<i>... in</i> Hotel Satan <i>were playing</i>
<i>the game called "The Dead Pool."</i>
298
00:29:50,039 --> 00:29:52,428
<i>Sources say</i>
<i>the object of the game...</i>
299
00:29:52,639 --> 00:29:55,392
<i>... was to pick</i>
<i>eight Bay Area celebrities...</i>
300
00:29:55,599 --> 00:29:59,148
<i>... who'll die</i>
<i>by a predetermined date.</i>
301
00:29:59,359 --> 00:30:03,955
<i>The winner was to possess the list</i>
<i>with the most dead celebrities.</i>
302
00:30:04,159 --> 00:30:06,195
<i>What makes this story significant...</i>
303
00:30:06,399 --> 00:30:11,154
<i>... is that rock star Johnny Squares</i>
<i>was on director Swan's list.</i>
304
00:30:11,359 --> 00:30:14,032
<i>Although Swan would not comment...</i>
305
00:30:14,239 --> 00:30:17,436
<i>... we have confirmed that</i>
<i>there was such a game...</i>
306
00:30:17,639 --> 00:30:22,030
<i>... and Swan's production accountant,</i>
<i>Dean Madison, was also involved.</i>
307
00:30:22,279 --> 00:30:24,713
<i>Ironically, Madison died yesterday...</i>
308
00:30:24,919 --> 00:30:28,229
<i>... in a tragic holdup</i>
<i>that took place in Chinatown.</i>
309
00:30:31,239 --> 00:30:35,312
"No man is master of the
breath of life so as to retain it...
310
00:30:35,519 --> 00:30:38,397
...and none has mastery
over the day of death.
311
00:30:38,599 --> 00:30:41,318
For the Lord of all
shows no partiality...
312
00:30:41,519 --> 00:30:43,077
...nor does he fear greatness...
313
00:30:43,279 --> 00:30:46,635
...because he made the great
as well as the small.
314
00:30:46,879 --> 00:30:49,518
And he provides for all alike.
315
00:30:50,279 --> 00:30:53,669
And the dust returns to the
earth, as it once was.
316
00:30:54,159 --> 00:30:57,549
And the life breath
returns to God, who gaveth."
317
00:31:04,639 --> 00:31:06,311
My condolences.
318
00:31:06,999 --> 00:31:09,388
Mrs. Dayton, I'm terribly sorry.
319
00:31:09,639 --> 00:31:12,517
Suzanne, I'm very sorry.
320
00:31:12,719 --> 00:31:13,993
Thank you.
321
00:31:15,679 --> 00:31:17,158
My sympathies.
322
00:31:19,559 --> 00:31:23,074
Do you mind, gentlemen?
I happen to be at a funeral.
323
00:31:23,279 --> 00:31:25,110
I'd like to talk about your list.
324
00:31:25,319 --> 00:31:28,629
It's no big secret.
The cast and crew knew about it.
325
00:31:28,879 --> 00:31:31,916
The Dead Pool is just a harmless game.
326
00:31:32,119 --> 00:31:34,349
It sounds pretty sick to me.
327
00:31:34,959 --> 00:31:36,358
Let me tell you something.
328
00:31:36,719 --> 00:31:39,517
People are fascinated
with death and violence.
329
00:31:39,719 --> 00:31:41,516
That's why my films make money.
330
00:31:41,719 --> 00:31:44,870
They're an escape,
a vicarious release of fear.
331
00:31:45,079 --> 00:31:46,831
Same thing with this game.
332
00:31:47,039 --> 00:31:49,633
Nobody takes my films
or the Dead Pool seriously.
333
00:31:50,319 --> 00:31:53,675
Someone gave Squares the drugs
that killed him. Maybe you.
334
00:31:53,919 --> 00:31:57,195
You can't tie me to Johnny's death
because of a coincidence.
335
00:31:58,599 --> 00:32:02,672
My assistant and effects supervisor
played too. Why not talk to them?
336
00:32:02,879 --> 00:32:03,789
We will.
337
00:32:04,719 --> 00:32:06,755
But nobody on their list is dead yet.
338
00:32:06,999 --> 00:32:11,231
Johnny was a drug user and I predicted
he'd die this year. That's all.
339
00:32:11,439 --> 00:32:14,431
The idea is to pick celebrities
who won't make it...
340
00:32:14,639 --> 00:32:17,517
...because they're old, sick
or in a high-risk profession.
341
00:32:17,719 --> 00:32:20,517
- Like police work?
- Nothing personal.
342
00:32:20,719 --> 00:32:23,187
I don't like being on your list, Swan.
343
00:32:23,399 --> 00:32:25,993
That's what this is really about,
isn't it?
344
00:32:26,199 --> 00:32:27,314
If you have a choice...
345
00:32:27,519 --> 00:32:30,158
Maybe I'll start my own Pool
and put you on it.
346
00:32:30,359 --> 00:32:31,678
Are you threatening me?
347
00:32:32,319 --> 00:32:36,517
If you want to play the game,
you'd better know the rules, love.
348
00:32:54,679 --> 00:32:56,556
That's our report. I'm Patrick Snow.
349
00:32:56,759 --> 00:32:59,512
I'm Samantha Walker.
Thank you for being with us.
350
00:32:59,719 --> 00:33:01,596
Tune in tonight for a report...
351
00:33:01,799 --> 00:33:04,108
...on chemical dependency
among celebrities.
352
00:33:04,319 --> 00:33:05,877
Who they are, why they do it...
353
00:33:06,079 --> 00:33:10,038
...and the price they pay.
Tonight at 11. Good night.
354
00:33:10,959 --> 00:33:12,472
And we're clear.
355
00:33:30,519 --> 00:33:32,714
Thought I'd seen the last of you.
356
00:33:32,919 --> 00:33:34,352
I saw your report yesterday.
357
00:33:34,559 --> 00:33:36,595
We confirmed it
with people in the game.
358
00:33:36,799 --> 00:33:41,395
Vicky Owens, Swan's assistant,
and effects supervisor, Jeff Howser.
359
00:33:41,679 --> 00:33:44,398
It didn't occur to you
to clear it with us first?
360
00:33:44,599 --> 00:33:46,112
I had to go with the story.
361
00:33:46,319 --> 00:33:49,675
The papers got the same tip.
I had to get the story out fast.
362
00:33:49,919 --> 00:33:52,035
Or someone else would get it first?
363
00:33:52,239 --> 00:33:54,309
- Something like that.
- How were you tipped?
364
00:33:54,519 --> 00:33:58,307
By mail. A copy of the Dead Pool
and a letter explaining it.
365
00:34:00,799 --> 00:34:03,029
- It's already started.
- What has?
366
00:34:03,239 --> 00:34:05,195
All the media bullshit.
367
00:34:05,399 --> 00:34:09,278
Newspapers print the Dead Pool
and it hurts our investigation.
368
00:34:09,479 --> 00:34:10,958
What bothers you...
369
00:34:11,159 --> 00:34:13,798
...is that we found out about
the Dead Pool first.
370
00:34:14,039 --> 00:34:18,157
You people take Janero and the Dead
Pool, add hype and distortion...
371
00:34:18,359 --> 00:34:19,951
...and innocent people get hurt.
372
00:34:20,159 --> 00:34:22,036
Aren't you overreacting?
373
00:34:22,239 --> 00:34:23,558
I've seen it happen.
374
00:34:23,759 --> 00:34:26,478
I don't like the hype, either...
375
00:34:26,679 --> 00:34:28,954
...but it happens when reporters
compete for a story.
376
00:34:29,319 --> 00:34:33,153
Why don't you start thinking about
your responsibility to the public?
377
00:34:34,559 --> 00:34:37,357
You can't kill the messenger
because of the message.
378
00:34:38,919 --> 00:34:43,037
I'm sorry, it wasn't my intention
to screw up your investigation.
379
00:34:43,959 --> 00:34:46,075
Here's the list. Now, excuse me.
380
00:34:48,519 --> 00:34:49,668
Thanks.
381
00:34:53,279 --> 00:34:55,634
It seems I owe you one.
382
00:34:57,639 --> 00:34:59,072
Dinner, that is.
383
00:35:02,119 --> 00:35:06,670
I was offered a job as an anchor
at this small local station.
384
00:35:06,919 --> 00:35:08,272
Because...
385
00:35:08,519 --> 00:35:11,556
...I was first runner-up
in Miss Colorado.
386
00:35:11,759 --> 00:35:14,273
Colorado? We're right over here.
387
00:35:14,479 --> 00:35:18,677
But I had absolutely no experience,
just my bachelor's in journalism.
388
00:35:18,919 --> 00:35:22,594
But it was a way in, so I grabbed it.
389
00:35:25,599 --> 00:35:28,432
But I didn't just smile at
the camera and read copy.
390
00:35:28,639 --> 00:35:31,153
I did anything and everything
at this station.
391
00:35:31,359 --> 00:35:35,272
Sports, news, hard news, weather.
392
00:35:35,479 --> 00:35:37,310
I produced documentaries.
393
00:35:39,119 --> 00:35:40,916
I love San Francisco.
394
00:35:41,119 --> 00:35:42,677
But it isn't easy.
395
00:35:44,039 --> 00:35:46,109
Big city, big news.
396
00:35:46,959 --> 00:35:49,234
I had to prove myself all over again.
397
00:35:49,439 --> 00:35:51,031
Have you succeeded?
398
00:35:51,359 --> 00:35:52,553
Somewhat.
399
00:35:53,879 --> 00:35:55,198
Apparently not with you.
400
00:35:56,439 --> 00:36:00,591
I shouldn't complain. At least you
stayed for dinner this time.
401
00:36:02,319 --> 00:36:04,389
I'd still love to do your story.
402
00:36:04,999 --> 00:36:06,148
No, thanks.
403
00:36:06,439 --> 00:36:09,590
You're wrong about me, Callahan,
and what I want to do.
404
00:36:10,279 --> 00:36:12,190
I wish I could convince you.
405
00:36:12,559 --> 00:36:13,958
I'll tell you what.
406
00:36:14,479 --> 00:36:16,071
Let's think on it.
407
00:36:17,119 --> 00:36:18,871
Sounds fair.
408
00:36:20,599 --> 00:36:21,827
Thank you.
409
00:36:35,839 --> 00:36:38,956
It's the truth,
I don't care what you say.
410
00:36:45,639 --> 00:36:47,197
Hey, Callahan.
411
00:36:47,559 --> 00:36:49,993
- You're Callahan, aren't you?
- That's right.
412
00:36:50,199 --> 00:36:51,234
What can I do for you?
413
00:36:51,439 --> 00:36:53,748
You're the cop who put Janero away.
414
00:36:56,679 --> 00:36:59,147
All I want is your autograph.
415
00:37:00,879 --> 00:37:02,597
Can I shake your hand?
416
00:37:06,079 --> 00:37:07,432
I'd just like to thank you.
417
00:37:07,639 --> 00:37:10,836
It's about time somebody
did something about Janero.
418
00:37:11,039 --> 00:37:14,588
Could you sign it to
Chester Docksteder? That's me.
419
00:37:15,679 --> 00:37:18,591
- Let me buy you a drink.
- Some other time.
420
00:37:19,279 --> 00:37:22,794
We need more cops like you.
That's what we need.
421
00:37:23,359 --> 00:37:25,475
I gotta change my shorts.
422
00:37:29,079 --> 00:37:30,671
What are you laughing at?
423
00:37:30,919 --> 00:37:33,513
This is your 15 minutes, Callahan.
424
00:37:34,079 --> 00:37:38,277
Andy Warhol said everybody's famous
for 15 minutes. Well, this is it.
425
00:37:38,479 --> 00:37:39,468
Swell.
426
00:37:54,679 --> 00:37:56,158
Was it your first autograph?
427
00:37:56,359 --> 00:37:57,474
Yeah.
428
00:37:57,719 --> 00:37:59,789
And I hope my last.
429
00:39:23,079 --> 00:39:24,717
You know something?
430
00:39:24,999 --> 00:39:27,797
I don't think Lou Janero
likes you very much.
431
00:39:39,239 --> 00:39:41,833
She's okay. Just a little shaken up.
432
00:39:47,759 --> 00:39:49,397
How're you doing, girl?
433
00:39:52,959 --> 00:39:56,508
Whatever they're paying you, Harry,
it couldn't be enough.
434
00:40:00,959 --> 00:40:02,358
My colleagues.
435
00:40:07,319 --> 00:40:09,116
I don't want to be the news.
436
00:40:10,679 --> 00:40:12,271
Let's get you out of here.
437
00:40:44,039 --> 00:40:45,916
You sure you want to see this guy?
438
00:40:46,119 --> 00:40:47,313
Yeah.
439
00:40:57,639 --> 00:40:58,913
Here's your animal.
440
00:40:59,159 --> 00:41:00,148
Hicks.
441
00:41:00,359 --> 00:41:01,917
What the fuck do you want?
442
00:41:02,119 --> 00:41:04,075
I brought you some cigarettes.
443
00:41:04,639 --> 00:41:06,755
And what would I have to do for you?
444
00:41:07,039 --> 00:41:09,917
Nothing. Just stand where I tell you.
445
00:41:35,359 --> 00:41:36,633
Stay right here.
446
00:41:36,879 --> 00:41:38,232
Fifth cell down.
447
00:41:46,999 --> 00:41:50,833
That's the trouble with this prison.
They let anybody in.
448
00:41:51,239 --> 00:41:54,197
I don't like scum like you
trying to kill me.
449
00:41:55,399 --> 00:42:00,029
Sounds to me like this Dead Pool thing
is making you a little paranoid.
450
00:42:01,519 --> 00:42:04,158
Oh, yeah. I heard about it.
451
00:42:04,399 --> 00:42:06,913
Good news travels fast.
452
00:42:07,119 --> 00:42:09,349
Big fucking media hero.
453
00:42:09,559 --> 00:42:12,027
Hero today and gone tomorrow.
454
00:42:12,239 --> 00:42:14,116
Call off your guns.
455
00:42:14,359 --> 00:42:15,951
What are you talking about?
456
00:42:16,159 --> 00:42:20,038
Your trouble is, you have
too much time on your hands.
457
00:42:20,239 --> 00:42:21,638
What you need is a job.
458
00:42:21,879 --> 00:42:24,109
- A what?
- A job.
459
00:42:24,559 --> 00:42:27,756
I'm gonna give you a job
being a postman, understand?
460
00:42:27,999 --> 00:42:31,309
It'll be your job to see
the mail gets through.
461
00:42:31,519 --> 00:42:33,555
See that gorilla down there?
462
00:42:41,959 --> 00:42:45,872
That's Butcher Hicks, and he's killed
three men. You know how?
463
00:42:46,079 --> 00:42:49,389
He tore them apart with his teeth.
Never found all the pieces.
464
00:42:49,599 --> 00:42:51,749
He has an unhealthy appetite.
465
00:42:51,999 --> 00:42:53,114
So what?
466
00:42:53,319 --> 00:42:55,787
So Hicks there is my new pen pal.
467
00:42:56,039 --> 00:42:57,995
I'll write him once a week...
468
00:42:58,199 --> 00:43:00,952
...about how I'm looking in
on his sick mother...
469
00:43:01,159 --> 00:43:03,992
...and trying to get him
special privileges here.
470
00:43:04,319 --> 00:43:08,756
And the interesting part is,
if anything happens to me...
471
00:43:08,999 --> 00:43:10,591
...and Hicks doesn't get his letter...
472
00:43:10,799 --> 00:43:13,757
...he'll be really pissed off.
And he'll come to see you...
473
00:43:13,999 --> 00:43:15,193
...because you're the mailman.
474
00:43:16,719 --> 00:43:21,429
He'll probably come down here
and cancel your ass like a stamp.
475
00:43:24,079 --> 00:43:26,832
You better ensure prompt,
courteous delivery.
476
00:43:27,039 --> 00:43:29,997
And pray nothing happens to me.
477
00:43:34,479 --> 00:43:36,151
- That's it?
- That's it.
478
00:43:36,359 --> 00:43:39,351
See that dirtbag
I was talking to down there?
479
00:43:41,879 --> 00:43:43,790
He says smoking can cause cancer...
480
00:43:44,039 --> 00:43:48,191
...and anyone who smokes as much
as you do is one dumb son of a bitch.
481
00:44:07,159 --> 00:44:08,877
Fire!
482
00:44:10,559 --> 00:44:13,995
Cut! Cut! Cut.
483
00:44:15,559 --> 00:44:17,868
Where is that stupid fuck? Howser!
484
00:44:18,959 --> 00:44:20,756
Get your ass down here.
485
00:44:23,079 --> 00:44:26,230
You're supposed to harpoon
the goddamn dummy.
486
00:44:27,439 --> 00:44:28,508
The tide shifted.
487
00:44:28,719 --> 00:44:32,189
"The tide shifted."
The ocean's incompetent, not you.
488
00:44:32,399 --> 00:44:34,435
This is the third time this week.
489
00:44:34,639 --> 00:44:36,516
You'll never work for me again.
490
00:44:36,719 --> 00:44:39,108
There's a bunch
of reporters down there.
491
00:44:41,919 --> 00:44:43,398
Come on, come on.
492
00:44:48,559 --> 00:44:50,197
Can we ask you a few questions?
493
00:44:50,399 --> 00:44:51,673
Please!
494
00:44:51,919 --> 00:44:53,637
I'd like to say one thing.
495
00:44:53,879 --> 00:44:55,631
In light of what's happened...
496
00:44:55,879 --> 00:44:58,518
...perhaps playing the Dead Pool game
isn't smart.
497
00:44:58,719 --> 00:45:01,358
Any tie between the Dead Pool
and Squares' death?
498
00:45:01,559 --> 00:45:03,914
None whatsoever. Next question.
499
00:45:04,119 --> 00:45:06,030
Mr. Swan, will the game continue?
500
00:45:06,239 --> 00:45:09,788
No, we're filming a nightmare
sequence at the shipyards...
501
00:45:10,039 --> 00:45:13,076
...and we'd like to forget this
and get on with our job.
502
00:45:13,319 --> 00:45:15,196
Johnny would have wanted it that way.
503
00:45:15,399 --> 00:45:20,075
First Squares died, then your
production accountant was killed.
504
00:45:20,279 --> 00:45:21,997
Is <i>Hotel Satan</i> cursed?
505
00:45:22,199 --> 00:45:25,236
People can believe what they want,
but nothing...
506
00:45:26,999 --> 00:45:29,752
Nothing will stop me
from making this film.
507
00:45:31,759 --> 00:45:33,158
End of interview.
508
00:46:15,639 --> 00:46:19,234
Whatever you want,
money, credit cards, just take it.
509
00:46:19,439 --> 00:46:22,351
Ever notice how time
slows down at night?
510
00:46:22,559 --> 00:46:26,074
Just like in my films.
A dream world.
511
00:46:26,279 --> 00:46:27,348
Shut up!
512
00:46:28,119 --> 00:46:30,394
I can't hear the colors.
I've got to hear them.
513
00:46:30,999 --> 00:46:35,151
That's the mark of a good director,
you have to hear the colors.
514
00:46:35,359 --> 00:46:38,192
You've gotta be able
to taste the sounds.
515
00:46:38,399 --> 00:46:39,673
I have a heart condition.
516
00:46:39,919 --> 00:46:41,637
A critic with a heart.
517
00:46:41,959 --> 00:46:43,108
That's a laugh.
518
00:46:45,159 --> 00:46:46,638
Do you like my films?
519
00:46:46,879 --> 00:46:50,394
- I said, do you like my films?
- Who are you?
520
00:46:55,439 --> 00:46:58,636
- You know who I am.
- I don't. I don't know you.
521
00:46:58,879 --> 00:47:00,107
God...
522
00:47:00,479 --> 00:47:03,357
...what kind of a film critic are you?
523
00:47:04,159 --> 00:47:05,956
<i>Shadows of the Dead</i>!
524
00:47:07,599 --> 00:47:09,237
<i>Hell Without the Devil</i>!
525
00:47:09,479 --> 00:47:11,435
<i>Night of the Slasher</i>!
526
00:47:12,959 --> 00:47:15,075
Peter Swan.
527
00:47:16,399 --> 00:47:17,878
Brilliant, love.
528
00:47:18,999 --> 00:47:20,910
What do you think of my films?
529
00:47:21,439 --> 00:47:24,715
Give me your honest opinion.
530
00:47:25,879 --> 00:47:27,631
I like them.
531
00:47:27,839 --> 00:47:28,908
Liar!
532
00:47:37,759 --> 00:47:40,398
The entrance is
through the sliding glass door.
533
00:47:40,599 --> 00:47:44,228
She wasn't sexually assaulted.
Killed sometime last night.
534
00:47:44,439 --> 00:47:47,351
Maid found her this morning.
Do you recognize her?
535
00:47:47,919 --> 00:47:50,308
Molly Fisher. Famous movie critic.
536
00:47:50,519 --> 00:47:52,908
On a scale of 1 to 10,
10 being the best...
537
00:47:53,119 --> 00:47:55,235
...I'd have to rate this one an 8.
538
00:47:55,439 --> 00:47:57,316
Harry, we found this.
539
00:47:58,079 --> 00:47:59,228
Thanks.
540
00:48:00,999 --> 00:48:02,148
Dead Pool.
541
00:48:02,399 --> 00:48:05,118
Molly Fisher's also
on Peter Swan's list.
542
00:48:41,079 --> 00:48:42,831
<i>Oh, God, it's coming!</i>
543
00:48:44,599 --> 00:48:48,717
Those are just some of the highlights
of Peter Swan's films.
544
00:48:49,839 --> 00:48:53,752
The typeface is the same as those sent
to the papers and TV stations.
545
00:48:53,999 --> 00:48:58,231
And the neighbor saw a man exiting
Molly Fisher's condo last night.
546
00:48:58,439 --> 00:49:00,907
Mid-30s, wearing a black jacket.
547
00:49:01,159 --> 00:49:02,911
I want Swan in custody now.
548
00:49:03,159 --> 00:49:04,512
It doesn't feel right.
549
00:49:04,719 --> 00:49:05,868
Doesn't feel right?
550
00:49:06,319 --> 00:49:09,709
Every celebrity on this list
called in the last couple days.
551
00:49:09,959 --> 00:49:12,348
They're all screaming
for police protection.
552
00:49:12,559 --> 00:49:16,472
We don't have the manpower
to be 24-hour babysitters.
553
00:49:16,679 --> 00:49:21,434
Ackerman is whining about the negative
publicity this case is giving us.
554
00:49:21,639 --> 00:49:24,631
And your name
is on this list too, Callahan.
555
00:49:26,279 --> 00:49:29,828
My gut feeling tells me Swan is
the best suspect we have...
556
00:49:30,039 --> 00:49:31,552
...so get his butt in here!
557
00:49:33,799 --> 00:49:34,948
Donnelly.
558
00:49:35,199 --> 00:49:36,234
What?
559
00:49:37,879 --> 00:49:40,154
It's for you, Callahan.
560
00:49:45,239 --> 00:49:46,911
We'll be right there.
561
00:49:47,239 --> 00:49:49,753
Wait a minute.
Where are you going?
562
00:49:50,039 --> 00:49:52,917
To do my job.
I think we've got our man.
563
00:49:55,399 --> 00:49:56,912
You all stay back.
564
00:49:57,679 --> 00:49:58,953
Everyone.
565
00:49:59,599 --> 00:50:00,634
I'm gonna go up.
566
00:50:01,919 --> 00:50:03,796
Where's the news crew?
567
00:50:05,799 --> 00:50:07,755
You better get them here.
568
00:50:09,319 --> 00:50:10,752
I mean it. Now!
569
00:50:16,479 --> 00:50:17,468
What's up?
570
00:50:17,639 --> 00:50:21,712
Name's Gus Wheeler.
He says he's the Dead Pool Killer.
571
00:50:21,959 --> 00:50:23,517
We found him like this.
572
00:50:23,719 --> 00:50:27,428
He's soaked in gas and threatening
to set himself on fire.
573
00:50:27,639 --> 00:50:29,038
Why not hose him down?
574
00:50:29,239 --> 00:50:33,232
He says if he sees a fireman or even
a garden hose, he'll torch himself.
575
00:50:33,999 --> 00:50:36,593
- What's he want?
- To be on television.
576
00:50:36,959 --> 00:50:39,393
He wants a cameraman and a reporter.
577
00:50:39,599 --> 00:50:41,157
Al and I will just pose as...
578
00:50:41,359 --> 00:50:44,112
It has to be someone he recognizes.
579
00:50:55,479 --> 00:50:57,947
Stay back. Stay back from me.
580
00:50:58,759 --> 00:51:00,477
It's gonna go up.
You hear me?
581
00:51:01,119 --> 00:51:02,916
Better keep those people back.
582
00:51:04,399 --> 00:51:06,230
- You all right?
- Not really.
583
00:51:06,439 --> 00:51:09,112
Stop right there! That's far enough.
584
00:51:09,999 --> 00:51:12,069
I'm Samantha Walker from...
585
00:51:12,279 --> 00:51:14,793
- I know who you are!
- What do you want?
586
00:51:16,799 --> 00:51:17,868
Is that camera on?
587
00:51:20,399 --> 00:51:22,549
You want to know why I'm doing this?
588
00:51:24,639 --> 00:51:27,312
- Because nobody cares.
- We care, Mr. Whee...
589
00:51:27,519 --> 00:51:30,556
No! Nobody ever paid
any attention to me before.
590
00:51:30,799 --> 00:51:34,109
In order to get attention,
you gotta do something.
591
00:51:35,359 --> 00:51:39,068
Well, I'm really gonna
do something this time!
592
00:51:39,479 --> 00:51:42,437
Did you have anything
to do with the deaths...
593
00:51:42,639 --> 00:51:44,709
...of Johnny Squares and Molly Fisher?
594
00:51:44,959 --> 00:51:47,393
No, I just said that so you'd listen!
595
00:51:50,079 --> 00:51:52,468
I want everyone to see this!
596
00:51:53,039 --> 00:51:55,269
I want everyone to remember me!
597
00:51:55,559 --> 00:51:58,073
And to remember what I did here!
598
00:52:04,919 --> 00:52:08,275
Oh, Jesus, Harry, he's
really gonna do it.
599
00:52:08,479 --> 00:52:12,677
That's right, lady. I'm really
gonna set myself on fire.
600
00:52:13,359 --> 00:52:15,554
And it's gonna be on the news...
601
00:52:15,959 --> 00:52:19,235
...and then finally everybody
will know about me.
602
00:52:19,439 --> 00:52:21,794
About me! Gus Wheeler!
603
00:52:24,279 --> 00:52:26,349
No one's gonna see you die.
604
00:52:28,719 --> 00:52:32,314
- What?
- I said, no one's gonna see you die.
605
00:52:32,679 --> 00:52:34,510
Not if we stop filming.
606
00:52:38,239 --> 00:52:40,878
You can talk to me
and tell me your story...
607
00:52:41,079 --> 00:52:42,876
...but we won't film your suicide.
608
00:52:49,039 --> 00:52:50,028
What are you doing?
609
00:52:50,239 --> 00:52:52,958
- Turn the camera back on!
- We're not gonna film it!
610
00:52:53,159 --> 00:52:55,434
- We're not.
- She's right.
611
00:52:55,639 --> 00:52:59,427
You can set yourself on fire
and we'll roast marshmallows.
612
00:52:59,639 --> 00:53:01,436
But you won't be on <i>News at 11.</i>
613
00:53:02,319 --> 00:53:04,275
You're ruining everything.
614
00:53:04,959 --> 00:53:06,278
Give me the flare.
615
00:53:06,479 --> 00:53:08,151
You've got plenty of coverage.
616
00:53:11,279 --> 00:53:12,234
You think so?
617
00:53:12,919 --> 00:53:13,874
Trust me.
618
00:53:22,239 --> 00:53:23,194
Okay.
619
00:53:38,599 --> 00:53:39,952
Harry, you okay?
620
00:53:41,559 --> 00:53:43,436
- You hurt?
- No, I'm fine.
621
00:53:47,719 --> 00:53:49,516
Get that gurney over here, quick!
622
00:53:52,519 --> 00:53:55,795
- You all right?
- Oh, God, Harry.
623
00:53:56,799 --> 00:54:00,030
This man sets himself on fire.
624
00:54:04,599 --> 00:54:07,477
- And it's my fault.
- It was an accident.
625
00:54:09,679 --> 00:54:11,317
Maybe if we'd have kept filming.
626
00:54:11,519 --> 00:54:13,555
That's exactly what he wanted.
627
00:54:14,479 --> 00:54:19,109
What you did took guts. Most people
would have gone for the exclusive.
628
00:54:25,079 --> 00:54:26,831
Reel three, George.
629
00:54:30,199 --> 00:54:31,552
Just a moment.
630
00:54:32,039 --> 00:54:35,270
What is this? Why the fuck
are you harassing me?
631
00:54:35,479 --> 00:54:37,515
I was at a party when
Fisher was killed.
632
00:54:37,719 --> 00:54:40,631
I was there until 2,
and I have witnesses.
633
00:54:40,839 --> 00:54:42,272
We know that. We checked.
634
00:54:42,479 --> 00:54:47,473
Somebody's trying to make us think
that you killed Squares and Fisher.
635
00:54:49,319 --> 00:54:53,153
- Any idea who it is?
- Are you kidding? It could be anyone.
636
00:54:53,719 --> 00:54:55,949
They all hate me. My former agent.
637
00:54:56,159 --> 00:54:59,310
My producers, my crew. The public.
638
00:54:59,519 --> 00:55:03,717
They envy my talent so much
they wish to destroy it.
639
00:55:06,159 --> 00:55:08,912
You don't believe me?
Talk to my secretary.
640
00:55:09,119 --> 00:55:12,998
She'll show you the letters I get.
Warnings, death threats...
641
00:55:13,199 --> 00:55:16,191
I get so many,
I don't pay attention anymore.
642
00:55:16,679 --> 00:55:18,112
I'll check on it.
643
00:55:18,759 --> 00:55:20,158
Tell me...
644
00:55:20,599 --> 00:55:23,432
...anyone else have
a jacket like this?
645
00:55:23,639 --> 00:55:24,788
Most of my crew. Why?
646
00:55:25,039 --> 00:55:29,271
Maybe it was someone in your crew,
or who's worked for you in the past.
647
00:55:29,479 --> 00:55:33,791
Whoever's doing these murders uses
your films and you as inspiration.
648
00:55:36,119 --> 00:55:39,589
<i>Welcome to the</i> Nolan Kennard Show.
<i>Sex, violence, pornography:</i>
649
00:55:39,799 --> 00:55:44,031
<i>I say it's out of hand. It's time</i>
<i>we have guidelines for what we watch.</i>
650
00:55:45,639 --> 00:55:49,712
<i>I don't want Big Brother out there</i>
<i>telling me what to read or watch.</i>
651
00:55:52,879 --> 00:55:56,474
<i>- What's your opinion?</i>
<i>- Anybody can watch anything...</i>
652
00:55:56,679 --> 00:55:59,398
<i>... as long as it doesn't</i>
<i>hurt somebody else.</i>
653
00:56:01,599 --> 00:56:03,237
<i>Take it easy.</i>
654
00:56:03,439 --> 00:56:05,270
<i>Give me a chance here.</i>
655
00:56:05,479 --> 00:56:07,788
<i>Who decides what's harmful?</i>
656
00:56:07,999 --> 00:56:10,149
<i>Isn't that what we're talking about?</i>
657
00:57:34,159 --> 00:57:38,038
First Johnny Squares, then Molly
Fisher, now Nolan Kennard.
658
00:57:38,239 --> 00:57:42,517
- Like I said, celebrities always die...
- In threes, yeah.
659
00:57:43,719 --> 00:57:47,109
- At least the guy went out with a...
- A bang, I know.
660
00:57:49,519 --> 00:57:52,113
- What do you have, Russ?
- Hello, Harry.
661
00:57:52,319 --> 00:57:56,949
From the residue on the frags,
I'd say plastic. Probably C3 or 4.
662
00:57:57,159 --> 00:57:59,115
We'll do an analysis back at the lab.
663
00:57:59,319 --> 00:58:01,708
- Let me know the results.
- You got it.
664
00:58:08,119 --> 00:58:09,472
What's that?
665
00:58:09,679 --> 00:58:11,112
I don't know.
666
00:58:11,559 --> 00:58:14,153
It looks like the wheel from a toy.
667
00:58:21,359 --> 00:58:23,668
Have you been questioned about
Nolan Kennard?
668
00:58:23,919 --> 00:58:26,149
Is his death connected
to the Dead Pool?
669
00:58:26,359 --> 00:58:28,395
- I don't know.
- Is his death due to your list?
670
00:58:28,599 --> 00:58:30,590
- I don't know.
- In <i>Hell Without the Devil...</i>
671
00:58:30,799 --> 00:58:34,587
...a character's poisoned.<i>Night of</i>
<i>the Slasher</i> has several stabbings.
672
00:58:34,799 --> 00:58:37,438
- We can guess what <i>Hotel Satan...</i>
- Get to the point.
673
00:58:37,679 --> 00:58:40,876
Are there parallels between the deaths
in your film...
674
00:58:41,079 --> 00:58:44,958
...and the death of Johnny Squares?
- That's a stupid question!
675
00:58:45,159 --> 00:58:49,675
- Do you feel any responsibility?
- You've blown this out of proportion.
676
00:58:49,879 --> 00:58:53,030
<i>You want to speak to somebody?</i>
<i>Speak to the police.</i>
677
00:58:53,239 --> 00:58:57,232
<i>Talk to Inspector Callahan.</i>
<i>He'll tell you I'm not a suspect.</i>
678
00:58:57,439 --> 00:58:59,475
<i>I have nothing</i>
<i>to do with these deaths.</i>
679
00:58:59,679 --> 00:59:01,988
<i>That's all I have to say, now sod off.</i>
680
00:59:02,319 --> 00:59:03,957
Callahan!
681
00:59:39,079 --> 00:59:40,478
You.
682
01:00:13,639 --> 01:00:14,708
Harry.
683
01:00:17,399 --> 01:00:19,469
I think that's about it for me.
684
01:00:23,279 --> 01:00:24,428
What's that tattoo?
685
01:00:25,119 --> 01:00:26,632
Oh, that.
686
01:00:26,839 --> 01:00:29,069
One of my grandfather's superstitions.
687
01:00:29,279 --> 01:00:32,749
You see, he painted these words
on my back and chest.
688
01:00:32,999 --> 01:00:36,435
It's supposed to ward off
anything that's harmful or evil.
689
01:00:36,639 --> 01:00:40,791
When he heard I was your partner,
he figured I could use the help.
690
01:00:41,039 --> 01:00:43,189
I was just trying
to honor the old guy.
691
01:00:43,839 --> 01:00:46,512
Besides, I didn't think it could hurt.
692
01:00:47,239 --> 01:00:49,594
Listen, I think I'm gonna go home.
693
01:00:49,799 --> 01:00:52,108
I'll catch you later for a beer.
694
01:01:27,359 --> 01:01:29,190
- See him?
- I saw him.
695
01:02:06,239 --> 01:02:07,718
He can't be over there.
696
01:02:08,319 --> 01:02:09,718
How y'all doing?
697
01:02:25,319 --> 01:02:27,310
You're the last asshole Janero sends.
698
01:02:27,519 --> 01:02:28,793
Wait, you got it wrong!
699
01:02:29,039 --> 01:02:32,190
Don't fuck with me, buddy.
I'll kick your ass right now.
700
01:02:32,399 --> 01:02:33,548
It's not what you think.
701
01:02:33,759 --> 01:02:35,636
Janero did hire us.
702
01:02:35,839 --> 01:02:37,636
But this ain't a hit.
703
01:02:37,839 --> 01:02:41,036
Janero doesn't want
anything to happen to you.
704
01:02:41,279 --> 01:02:42,428
We're your...
705
01:02:43,319 --> 01:02:44,354
...bodyguards.
706
01:02:54,719 --> 01:02:57,392
Those letters
all came from your files.
707
01:02:57,759 --> 01:03:00,193
"Harlan Rook." God.
708
01:03:00,399 --> 01:03:01,718
Yes, I remember him.
709
01:03:01,919 --> 01:03:06,197
Every time I was at a film festival
or a seminar, he was there.
710
01:03:06,399 --> 01:03:10,472
Mr. Know-It-AII, I called him.
He knew everything about my films.
711
01:03:11,959 --> 01:03:15,190
To tell the truth,
I found it a little unnerving.
712
01:03:16,079 --> 01:03:17,478
What'd he want?
713
01:03:18,239 --> 01:03:21,788
He had this screenplay for
a horror film he wanted me to direct.
714
01:03:21,999 --> 01:03:24,559
He said it'd be
the ultimate Peter Swan film.
715
01:03:24,759 --> 01:03:26,636
He was crazy.
I couldn't get rid of him.
716
01:03:26,839 --> 01:03:30,195
Finally, my attorney
put a restraining order on him.
717
01:03:30,399 --> 01:03:31,548
Then what happened?
718
01:03:31,759 --> 01:03:33,750
I didn't see or hear from him again.
719
01:03:33,999 --> 01:03:36,718
That must have been over a year ago.
720
01:03:37,999 --> 01:03:38,988
Is he the one?
721
01:03:39,199 --> 01:03:41,315
The typewriter
used on these letters...
722
01:03:41,519 --> 01:03:44,909
...is the same one used
to tip us off to the Dead Pool.
723
01:03:49,359 --> 01:03:52,476
Call Swan's attorney
and see what he knows about Rook.
724
01:03:52,679 --> 01:03:56,115
- And run a DMV check on the address.
- Right.
725
01:04:22,319 --> 01:04:26,437
It might not be a bad idea to start
playing it a little safe.
726
01:04:26,639 --> 01:04:28,709
Maybe your granddaddy can paint me up.
727
01:04:28,959 --> 01:04:30,711
Look, I'm being serious.
728
01:04:30,959 --> 01:04:34,668
Don't go where you normally go,
not even home. You can stay with me.
729
01:04:35,119 --> 01:04:38,156
Thanks, but I think I can
do a little better.
730
01:04:48,599 --> 01:04:50,112
Price of fame.
731
01:05:19,079 --> 01:05:22,435
Is this what Ackerman meant
by cooperating with the press?
732
01:05:22,639 --> 01:05:25,949
It must have been one of those
in-depth interviews.
733
01:05:36,399 --> 01:05:39,391
I got a lead on Rook.
A psychiatrist who treated him.
734
01:05:39,599 --> 01:05:40,793
Good.
735
01:05:43,759 --> 01:05:45,715
- Give it a try.
- Okay.
736
01:05:49,999 --> 01:05:52,911
It won't respond.
Someone's on my frequency.
737
01:06:05,519 --> 01:06:07,987
Forget it. It's just not working.
738
01:06:37,199 --> 01:06:39,030
Now what the hell is that?
739
01:09:49,879 --> 01:09:51,790
Time's up, Callahan.
740
01:10:27,719 --> 01:10:29,232
You all right, Al?
741
01:10:29,559 --> 01:10:31,072
Shit.
742
01:10:43,559 --> 01:10:45,117
Two fractured ribs.
743
01:10:45,599 --> 01:10:48,477
He bled in the chest.
We drained it and set up an IV.
744
01:10:48,679 --> 01:10:52,308
He's lucky, the bulletproof vest
he had on saved his life.
745
01:10:53,119 --> 01:10:55,587
Another of my
grandfather's superstitions.
746
01:10:55,799 --> 01:10:58,916
When your partner gives you advice,
take it.
747
01:11:00,119 --> 01:11:01,518
Harry.
748
01:11:09,719 --> 01:11:13,394
This is Dr. Friedman, chief
psychiatrist here at the hospital.
749
01:11:13,599 --> 01:11:15,191
I'm sorry about what happened.
750
01:11:15,399 --> 01:11:17,151
I feel somewhat responsible.
751
01:11:17,359 --> 01:11:20,317
Your partner contacted me about
a former patient of ours.
752
01:11:20,559 --> 01:11:21,992
- Harlan Rook?
- Yes.
753
01:11:22,199 --> 01:11:25,714
At first, I didn't recall the name.
I found the file today.
754
01:11:26,479 --> 01:11:28,470
He was evaluated here a year ago.
755
01:11:28,679 --> 01:11:31,034
The diagnosis was
process schizophrenia.
756
01:11:31,239 --> 01:11:33,594
- Multiple personality.
- Not exactly.
757
01:11:34,239 --> 01:11:36,116
His sense of self-hate
was so strong...
758
01:11:36,319 --> 01:11:39,277
...that he no longer had
any personality of his own.
759
01:11:39,479 --> 01:11:42,835
Consequently,
he substituted identities...
760
01:11:43,039 --> 01:11:45,348
...found in books, films...
761
01:11:45,559 --> 01:11:46,958
...fan magazines.
762
01:11:47,159 --> 01:11:50,037
Identities with which he had
love-hate relationships.
763
01:11:50,239 --> 01:11:52,514
He wasn't dangerous enough to hold?
764
01:11:52,719 --> 01:11:55,995
Most mentally ill people
are not violent, inspector.
765
01:11:56,199 --> 01:12:00,636
By law, a person who poses no danger
can only be held for 72 hours.
766
01:12:01,559 --> 01:12:05,188
I'm sorry, this is one instance
where the system failed.
767
01:12:05,439 --> 01:12:08,715
- Is this address recent?
- I assume it's still the same.
768
01:12:12,639 --> 01:12:13,788
Samantha Walker.
769
01:12:14,039 --> 01:12:15,995
<i>This is Peter Swan, Ms. Walker.</i>
770
01:12:16,199 --> 01:12:18,872
<i>Your coverage of my predicament</i>
<i>has been thorough...</i>
771
01:12:19,079 --> 01:12:22,435
<i>... but my side hasn't been told</i>
<i>as well as it could be.</i>
772
01:12:22,639 --> 01:12:23,833
I see.
773
01:12:24,039 --> 01:12:27,031
<i>I'm prepared to grant you</i>
<i>an exclusive interview.</i>
774
01:12:27,239 --> 01:12:29,070
<i>Are you interested?</i>
775
01:12:33,759 --> 01:12:35,158
No doubt about it.
776
01:12:35,359 --> 01:12:36,633
He's our boy, Harry.
777
01:12:36,879 --> 01:12:39,837
Explosives. Caps.
778
01:12:40,039 --> 01:12:42,314
Detonator. It all connects.
779
01:12:42,919 --> 01:12:44,750
Harry, you gotta see this.
780
01:12:49,439 --> 01:12:51,031
Talk about obsession.
781
01:13:07,039 --> 01:13:10,588
Looks like he had a real
Peter Swan shrine going here.
782
01:13:13,279 --> 01:13:15,031
I'm not sure.
783
01:13:15,239 --> 01:13:17,514
I could have sworn I put it in my bag.
784
01:13:17,719 --> 01:13:19,710
But I'm not sure.
785
01:13:19,959 --> 01:13:23,269
- Bob, do you have my little mike?
- It's in your bag.
786
01:13:23,479 --> 01:13:24,878
Thank you.
787
01:14:01,879 --> 01:14:02,948
Look at this.
788
01:14:05,879 --> 01:14:07,949
I'll call the TV station.
789
01:14:19,639 --> 01:14:23,393
Samantha went out to the shipyard
to interview Peter Swan.
790
01:14:23,599 --> 01:14:25,590
Swan doesn't know anything about it.
791
01:14:25,799 --> 01:14:27,949
- What's this?
- A payroll stub.
792
01:14:28,159 --> 01:14:31,276
Sundown Security, made out to
Ed Butler? I don't get it.
793
01:14:31,479 --> 01:14:35,074
That's the company that provides
security for Swan's locations.
794
01:14:35,279 --> 01:14:37,873
Ed Butler may be an alias for Rook.
795
01:14:38,079 --> 01:14:40,115
Where are you going? Harry?
796
01:14:40,319 --> 01:14:41,991
Harry!
797
01:14:42,199 --> 01:14:43,951
That's my car!
798
01:14:51,599 --> 01:14:54,397
Yes. That's the shot I'm looking for.
799
01:15:05,439 --> 01:15:07,157
What is it you want from me?
800
01:15:07,359 --> 01:15:09,634
You've got it wrong, love.
801
01:15:10,279 --> 01:15:12,235
This is what you wanted.
802
01:15:12,479 --> 01:15:15,118
An exclusive interview.
803
01:15:16,039 --> 01:15:17,233
But you're not Swan.
804
01:15:17,439 --> 01:15:19,350
Shut up! You don't know!
805
01:15:19,559 --> 01:15:21,595
You don't know!
806
01:15:22,399 --> 01:15:24,071
I know who I am.
807
01:15:24,679 --> 01:15:26,078
Do you know who you are?
808
01:15:26,439 --> 01:15:28,714
- Do you?!
- Yes.
809
01:15:29,079 --> 01:15:30,478
All those films he made.
810
01:15:30,679 --> 01:15:32,795
Those are my nightmares, not his!
811
01:15:33,519 --> 01:15:37,432
Every night I dream,
and somehow he reads my mind.
812
01:15:37,639 --> 01:15:39,709
He stole my thoughts.
813
01:15:39,959 --> 01:15:44,316
He put my thoughts on film,
and he takes all the credit.
814
01:15:46,319 --> 01:15:48,275
He can't get away with it.
815
01:15:50,799 --> 01:15:52,551
He has to pay.
816
01:15:58,439 --> 01:16:00,475
He stole my nightmares
and made them real.
817
01:16:00,679 --> 01:16:02,476
So I stole his Dead Pool.
818
01:16:02,959 --> 01:16:05,427
I'll play his game and make it real.
819
01:16:07,919 --> 01:16:09,511
He can take credit for that.
820
01:17:31,599 --> 01:17:32,748
Drop it, Rook.
821
01:17:32,999 --> 01:17:37,038
You didn't die, Callahan,
so I had to find another celebrity.
822
01:17:41,399 --> 01:17:44,311
- You're next.
- Shoot me, Callahan.
823
01:17:44,959 --> 01:17:46,438
Maybe you'll get lucky.
824
01:17:46,639 --> 01:17:50,427
Maybe my muscles won't contract
and drive this knife into her throat.
825
01:17:51,959 --> 01:17:52,948
Let her go.
826
01:17:53,719 --> 01:17:54,947
First the gun.
827
01:17:55,159 --> 01:17:57,229
Drop it and kick it over to me.
828
01:18:01,199 --> 01:18:02,791
Time's up. What's it gonna be?
829
01:18:11,079 --> 01:18:12,273
What the fuck?
830
01:18:16,999 --> 01:18:19,194
You've locked yourself in, asshole.
831
01:18:19,719 --> 01:18:21,038
Yeah.
832
01:18:21,239 --> 01:18:22,991
Just you and me, asshole.
833
01:18:25,599 --> 01:18:26,952
The gun, Callahan.
834
01:18:28,759 --> 01:18:30,590
- Now!
- No!
835
01:18:30,799 --> 01:18:32,391
He'll kill us both!
836
01:18:35,039 --> 01:18:36,358
Oh, God.
837
01:18:46,119 --> 01:18:49,714
You let me down,
Mr. Famous-Fucking-Cop.
838
01:18:50,079 --> 01:18:51,671
You let Swan get away.
839
01:18:51,919 --> 01:18:53,398
You're the killer, not Swan.
840
01:18:53,679 --> 01:18:55,351
I should've killed you first.
841
01:18:55,559 --> 01:18:57,436
That was my big mistake.
842
01:18:57,719 --> 01:18:59,710
Now kick it over to me.
843
01:19:00,759 --> 01:19:02,636
Harry, don't.
844
01:19:11,199 --> 01:19:12,712
Think you're smart, don't you?
845
01:19:29,199 --> 01:19:30,951
Callahan, you son of a bitch!
846
01:19:36,719 --> 01:19:38,471
I'm gonna kill you slow!
847
01:19:43,399 --> 01:19:45,310
Do you hear that, Callahan?!
848
01:20:59,039 --> 01:21:00,677
Stay in there.
849
01:22:07,039 --> 01:22:08,870
Callahan!
850
01:22:16,119 --> 01:22:18,235
Come on out, Callahan.
851
01:22:30,519 --> 01:22:32,794
There's nowhere left to run, Callahan.
852
01:22:33,679 --> 01:22:35,635
Don't make me come in and get you.
853
01:22:39,319 --> 01:22:40,877
The game's over!
854
01:22:41,079 --> 01:22:42,398
You're out of bullets.
855
01:23:11,039 --> 01:23:12,552
You know what that means.
856
01:23:14,559 --> 01:23:15,958
You're shit out of luck.
857
01:23:59,239 --> 01:24:02,037
- Where's Rook?
- He's hanging out back there.
858
01:24:07,319 --> 01:24:10,038
Inspector, was this another
hit attempt by Janero?
859
01:24:10,239 --> 01:24:12,707
Is it connected to the Dead Pool case?
